  • Old cues as playing cues ?

hi all would be really interested in your opinions on using an old one piece cue to play the modern snooker game, realise people collect them....but interested who actually use them as players.
Anything dated from around 1900 to 1950, many say old cues are too whippy to play the modern game well but i've have good experiences and the "feel" you get from using an old piece of ash or even maple.
Just wondered if any or many of you use an old one piece in favour of the more modern cues and how you find they compare ? :snooker:

looks like i'd better save this question for cuesnviews...you must all have new posh cues and not using the old bits of wood, only me still experimenting between old & new...?

A few of my mates tried playing with older cues, it rarely worked out though as they had to go away from their normal cue and try to play with something different. I guess if you get a cue that has the perfect balance, weight and feel then it shouldn't matter if it's 1 month old or 100 years old.

maybe thats why people have replica cues made...they like the idea of an old cue but it maybe doesn't have the playing qualities needed so they have a replica of an old cue made using modern materials...the perfect compromise or does that defeat the object using an old cue.....?

Old cues are usually made from the same materials, but today a lot of cues are made heavier, more balanced and with the extensions making shots a lot easier.

I have my own preferences when it comes to a cue and most of the older cues i see fall outwith these, mainly due to the weight and butt thickness.

i used to have a ye olde ash as my playing cue till it got stolen, lovely well balanced cue and stiff ash shaft

shame big money in old cues nowadays, people rather look at them than play with them

a real shame that playable ye olde ash cues are rare, and most players dream, you must have been gutted!

i think its good that people collect them to preserve a bit of snooker history and to generate interest this can only be a good thing, but due to the high prices people are reluctant to use them as players which is a real shame, there's always something special about using an old piece of ash, as many do retain great playing qualities some can be to whippy, but if you drop on a nice one they can be hard to beat.

i've not seen one of Trevors replicas only in a picture but sure they would be exceptional, judging by his new cues.

I have seen a few Tony Ions replicas which are very nice lots of care and attention to detail, Tony Glover also makes some but for me i think Tony Ions takes some beating in this field ( without seeing Trevors ! )

that makes sense about dom dale i think he was looking for the illusive original and very rare "playable" burwat ..... so having a top quality replica more realistic i reckon, with most the originals being to whippy.

only an extra £50 i thought it would have been much more!
