Hi all,
(In a nutshell...)
I’ve been scouting these forums for advice on a new ¾ length cue. My requirements have been: a smooth ash cue (when cueing), around 9mm tip (8-ball Pool mostly & some Snooker), standard length, not too light (around 17/18oz). I’ve come down to two cues of (almost) identical design and would just like to ask for some expert advice to help in my decision-making.
The two cues I’m considering are:
1) Craftsman Victor cue (inc. mini butt)
- Total cost, including hard case + p&p = £89.45 (www.craftsmancues.com)
2) Peradon Edwardian
- Total cost, including hard case + p&p = £84.00 (www.topcue.co.uk)
Although I originally preferred the Craftsman (based on recommendations on this forum), Leeds is too far for me to visit and try out the cue. However, Topcue are based only a 30min drive away, so I should be able to try out the Peradon cue. Hmmm...
(Background...)
I am in the second season of playing for my local pub’s 8-ball Pool team. I think I have steadily improved over the year or so, but I’ve been noticing some gripes in my current cue for a while now, so really fancy getting a new cue.
I currently have a Barracuda “Blue” pool cue, which cost me around £50 a couple of years ago. It’s done me well, but it was ordered over the internet and it’s always had a slight (minor) bend near the tip. It’s not very noticeable and doesn’t really affect cueing, but it’s always bugged me . It also a tad short and is not a very smooth cue (gets sticky easily), plus you can feel the grains in the wood when cueing. I’ve never put any oil on it (only recently realised you could do that), but I do clean it from time to time with a damp cloth and then dry/buff it afterwards.
I’ve been looking on this forum for cues and cue-makers that people recommend; the typical consensus has been the likes of: Trevor White, Mike Wooldridge, John Parris, Craftsman, etc... However, due to budget constraints (max £90 ideally for cue & “good” case inc. p&p), my options for a “good” cue are a tad limited, so maybe next time (when I’m more ”worthy” of such hand-made/spliced cues! )
I'd very much welcome any advice from people who know more than me about cues!!
P.S. If anyone's curious as to why I'm asking for advice for an 8-ball cue on a Snooker forum, it's coz all the other Pool forums were either just plain rubbish, or were more US-based. You guys know your stuff!
