  • What your butt diameter?

Hi Everyone. I am thinking about a purchasing a custom cue soon (order around late May) and wanted some advice on the correct butt diameter to use. Is there a "rule" or optimal size based on the size of your hand? I tend to grip the cue a bit and don't have a loose grip. I also tend to favor smaller diameters.

I'm not sure of the measurements of my cues but I find I can adapt to slightly different butt sizes, but it just depends how it relates to the size of the shaft and tip. I played snooker the other week with a mates cue since my pool cues are too small and I found the shaft to be too thick for my liking although the butt of the cue felt fine. Again like everything else it's just what ever you're comfortable with I think. As long as you don't grip too tightly though.

      Hi Longbomber,

The diameter of most cue butts is variable, although not by much in terms of actual measurements.

If you have played with various cues over time, you'll no doubt have noticed that some feel slimmer and some feel thicker. Generally, an average size of butt for a snooker cue would be approx 30mm, with anything feeling small, usually being of 29mm or less. When this size gets below 28mm, the butt will fell exceptionally small, and will not be to the liking of many players.
Conversely, a cue with a butt of anything above 31mm will feel quite thick, with anything above perhaps 32mm feeling really large, and again, probably too big for the vast majority of players.

So, in summary, most cues will have a butt between 28.5mm and 30.5mm in diameter, with the smaller size feeling pretty small and the larger size feeling pretty thick. The average for most cues readily available today would be approximately 29mm - 30mm.

This sort of measurement will feel best for most people.

Oh, by the way Longbomber, I haven't forgotton you and will sort a reply to your mail in the next half an hour.

        Trevor,
How woul;d you recommend the butt diameter to a player?
Does that have anythign to do with hand size, or the grip, or other factors?
        Thank you.

Trev answered it perfectly, I personally prefer a thicker butt, mine is 30.5mm, I've had cues at 29.5 and I found that too slim for my liking. I think it depends also on the size of your hand and fingers as to what you will feel comfortable with.

Rather personal question this, but if you must know it's approximately four, five inches I believe. That's just one cheek, though. Not really sure how to measure it otherwise.

There certainly was, it wasn't until reading it back I realised how bad that sounds.

LOL..I knew someone would eventually do this! That was part of the idea with the thread subject. I actually do want a serious answer, but knew the subject would get some attention.

It's funny what difference it makes my current cue is I think 29mm and my old cue isn't unusual probably 30-31 but it feels massive now and I can't play with it!

I am going through the same problem. I purchased a one-piece from a friend a while back. I had it extended and then lacquered, and now its too thick and I can't play with it at all. Prior to the lacquer, it was fine.

I am finding it really tough designing the right cue for my custom order. I guess if I was in the UK, I wouldn't have a problem - there would be many cues to choose from.

I feel so unfortunate being away from the snooker timezone.
