  • Has anyone ever done this ?

    Hi,
new to the forums. Been "out" of snooker for about 12 years. Just started playing again and have 1) Completely lost my touch and 2) Fallen out with my JP Classic cue. I've re-tipped it a couple of times, still not happy ... which leads me to my recent "experience"......

Playing down my newly found local club and my new tip falls off for the second time in a week, mid way through a session. I've got some Tweentens ten minute cement so I slap some on. Not wanting to stop playing, I look at the club cue racks to see if there are any 58 inch cues. Eventually pick one up which is 58 inches. It feels absolutely horrible... it's bent, its maple (I prefer ash), it's light (I prefer 19 - 20 oz), it has a rock hard tip, with very little meat left on it (I prefer soft and a little more fat)...... and....... I can pot with it and get some position. It was as though someone had rolled back 12-13 years and I could play again. Didn't miss a black off the spot for the next two frames. Started to enjoy myself.

The cue has the name Lindrum on it, and an M (presumeably medium weight).

Liked it so much I bought it off the club. Am not going to keep it ... want to have a custom made Trevor White ;-)

Just wondered ... anyone else have this experience i.e. picked up a club cue and found it did wonders for them ?

Only reason I bought it was to try and work out exactly WHY I got on so well with it before I order from TW.

    Strange eh ?

Yes and I can tell you it takes ages to get all the dirt out of ones orrifices :-)

And what ... you mean this is isn't 1984 ??? I thought all the cameras around the place were a dead giveaway !

Seriously ... got some tweentens with a tip clamp off fleebay and thought I'd give it a go. Believe or not it wasn't until I visited here that I found out I had used the WRONG type of super glue all those years ago (the thin runny stuff) ... no wonder my tips were fine until I shaped them down to where the super glue made them rock hard !

I've used the runny superglue since it first hit the market and never had a problem with it. The gel stuff some say is better but I've yet to apply enough of the runny stuff for the tip to be hardened by it which they say is the problem so I've never tried it. The knack to it is like painting a car, preperation is everything, two clean flat and smooth surfaces does it for me every time although on ocassion i've scratched a # into the base of a tip it's still been fine.

Wity - agreed - preparation ... athough the worry I always had is that in sanding the base of the new tip you make it a little more porous ... hence it sucks up more superglue. I'm sure that years ago I had a couple of superglued tips come off because the tip iteslf sucked up too much glue to have it stick.

Still ... getting a little off topic ... so no one has walked up to a club cue, played with it and thought "wow" ?

            Superglue gel is the future!
Clamps are the work of the devil!

Sorry for repeating this! I once picked up a 15oz might of even been 14oz at Craftsman an old Hixon. It felt great I was banging all sorts in with it but didn't buy it. Went back later and it was gone. Still regret that I thought it was too light , I would have still got the TW cue I have now but I still think it was worth £90 to have it. I had less cash then though.
I also played with an old maple that I liked at a club but didn't have the cheek to ask what they'd take for it!

I have managed a 68 break with a cue off the rack once......

I have also been on a break of 60 odd when my tip fell off, so i swiped the cue out of the hands of the lad i was playing and continued to make a ton...

Re: tip glue - I always use super glue (runny or gel). Preparation is a must, and i always lick the bottom of the tip before placing it on the glue... In the hope that my spit seals the tip from the glue soaking into the it !!!
              Highest Break
              Practice: 136 (2005)
              Match: 134 (2006)
              In 2011: 94
              Centuries made: 50+

Ahh back on topic. So I'm not the only one eh ? And Thinsy .... I think if you'd taken my cue off me and made a ton with it .... I'd be pulling on the rubber gloves and planning some painful insertion treatment.

Licking the tip to seal it ... nice idea... will give that a try. Mental note to self ... put the glue on the cue and not the tip !

See post #4? See the time? 6:58 am as I was having my first fag 'n coffee of the day.

10:58 am I'm in the club taking my first shot and guess what happened for the first time in 4 or 5 years maybe more?

                  Yup off she flies.

                  Sods law aint it.

Been carrying my tipping gear around in a glasses case for ages as well but I did not bother taking it today. Scrounged some glue and put it back on crooked so I played with a house cue.
As the topic goes I'd like to say I played good but alas I was bleedin useless.

lol yea a couple of months ago i let my father use my cue to have a feel, so i used the house cue. it felt too light, tip too hard, but the cue made the cb do everything i wanted it to do and i ended up putting more draw than i ever did! but didnt think too ask to buy it.

Hi guys, this is my first EVER post! Just signed up, great forum.
I used to live in Lancaster, had some to kill one day in town so nipped into the local Rileys for a knock. I'm not sure why but started playing with a house cue - heavy grain, heavy cue, rock hard tip and a clear three inches of shaft missing just below the tip accounting for half the shafts width. Needless to say I played my socks off! Pitty the cue was so poorly damaged, can only imagine how I would have played with a complete shaft on the cue!
At the minute I'm playing with a cue I bought a few years ago from Tony Wilshaw in Burslem, ('The Cue Company') anyone else have any experience of playing with his cues? I'm struggling with it recently, just doesn't feel right - cost a pretty penny though so I'm loath to give it up.
                        Cheers, Steve.

Hello guys 'n girls, why don't you put a thin bit of superglue on both surfaces, with a tooth pick or something, let it dry and THEN glue the tip on??? This way the wood and the tip doesn't "suck up" your glue.....

HA ha..... Yes done this many times but usually with pool rather than snooker. Can sometimes pick up an old rack cue and play brilliantly with it, far better than with my Trevor White cue, but the next time I use it, it all goes to #@##. Its strange alright and I have no idea what causes it.
