  • Re Graining?

Just had a look on Coutts Cues and one of the things he can do to cues is re graining.....whats this?

Is it just refilling the grain with a dark grain filler?

If so can anything be used for a diy job?

I like the look of a nice dark grain but mine has faded.

    I'd assume that's what he means yes, a re-finish.

You can do this yourself, but if you are very fond of your cue, it might be better to let someone who knows what their doing sort it out for you. I know it costs something to do that, but at least you'll guarantee it will be as it should be.

I'm also pretty sure Dave Coutts would do a good job of it, if that's where is most convenient for you to get it done.

not really most convenient, just happend to see it on his site.

He lists refinnish as a seperate job as well!

      Tip replacement £3
      Ferrule and tip replacement £10
Ferrule and tip different size, re-taper,re-grain £25
      Lengthening from £30
      Weight adjustment £10
      Name plate from £10
      Leather pad on butt £5
      Straightening of cue £5
      Re-graining of cue £15
Strip down and re-finish cue £30
      Joints from £37
Extending extensions to fit quick release joint £37
      Spiroloc quick release joint £50
      Butt extension 6" from £40

Its a craftsman cue so might have a word with them, don't want to bugger it up myself! Whats a reasonable price to pay? not that i would moan about £15 mind.

For the money he's charging for it, you can't go wrong. As long as he does it well.

Looking at your location however, I'd call into to see Dave and Simon, they'll be able do sort it I'm sure.

I have emailed them twice now on two seperate matters but still not had a reply.

Maybe i'm being impatient, i'll hold on for a bit then maybe try someone else.

ADR (anyone else in the know) - is this something that can go wildly wrong by doing yourself? if so, in what way?

also, a few pointers on application techniques if they arent secrets would be appreciated

I knew a guy who messed around with this and his cue was left flexible from about 10 inches from the tip...he stilled played with it though! Untill we were playing a friendly match and he was doing the old bendy cue bit before taking a shot and he snapped the end off! It was nothing short of hilarious and the match resumed about 5 minutes later when we stopped rolling about the floor.

What did he do with it to make it bendy, he must have got it wet through?

Well I never got the full details of what he did to it, he tried to straighten it himself and ended up ruining it. I guess the moral of the story is definitely leave it to the pro's, but if you don't it might prove to be a hilarious mistake!

its fairly simple but you need to make sure the stuff you use matches the stuff thats already on the cue!
