Butt Crack :D

Hi all.

Just a small question im sure someone has an answer. I have just got a new (2nd hand) 3/4 join cue and upon inspection i noticed a crack in the butt about 3/4 of an inch long from the join in the ebony. The shaft itself was very very dry so spent the last 3 days feeding the wood and polishing the joins, badge and ferrel. I just wondered, is there a way to fix the crack either:

A) By myself

or

B) Someone who would be specialised at this kind of repair. If so who?

Also is the butt Ebony or painted, makers name will tell us

Bitter - Its a Frank Callan 1100 series. It is most certainly ebony as ive seen nasty painted or dyed cues before. Also the "old man" is a carver and he too agrees its ebony.

Its awful, i have to either buy simple things like tips from a shop 30 miles away or buy online

might work out cheaper to post it to craftsman etc but we will see what we can do.

This is an easy problem to repair.

The issue arises when the joint is either poorly fitted to the butt of the cue, or, when the cue has had a knock and split the butt around the joint, as they can be a little suspect at this point on a 3/4 cue.

How old is the cue, is it new???

If so, it shoud not be like this and you should be able to get it replaced or refunded.

If it is not new, and you are looking to get it repaired, then it is not a big job and once done (by someone who knows what they are doing), will be virtually invisible and will not cause you any problems after.

EDIT...

Sorry, just seen it is a used cue. As I said above, it isn't something to be worried about if you get it done properly

Thanks Trev. Its about 5 years old. When i got it it was really really dry, brass was blemished and seriously needed some tlc. Spent last 4 days trying to get it back to life and now it is lovely. The kind of dryness of the cue was that to a match or a cocktail stick. Im happy to send the butt off to get repaired. But to who? Id like a good job done as i always believe in getting someone who knows what they are doing and not some cowboy with a tub of wood filer and black paint! ERK!!!
