Wood Lathe

Anyone know where I can get a small lathe so I can re-tip my cue with ease. I seen a guy on you tube just pop the shaft into a lathe and re-tip/shape very easily.

Obviously this lathe must cost a fortune but are there smaller cheaper versions out the for like £50?

Middle age has caught up with me now and i'm having to use reading glasses but fitting a tip by hand is so very easy I honestly think if you cant do it yourself you must be as blind as Mr McGoo.

Right mr derisive first of all, where in my post did I say I can’t fit a tip by myself? Secondly it’s down to personal preference why id like to use a lathe for the job. It looks much neater and there’s less chance of scuffing parts of the cue like the ferrule and shaft. Yes I’m aware fitting a tip by hand is easy but me and a couple of mates want the get a lathe for the long term. Please if you haven’t anything constructive to say or you are unable to help with the question then don’t bother posting, it’s that simple. It’s going to save you and me time.

Anybody use lathes for fitting tips? Do any of you cue makers use them for this job? If so is it indeed better than by hand?

ahh some tips of the trade literally! Can't wait, cheers Trev. Just out of curiosity though, have you tried to use a lathe for fitting tips? If so how did you find it? My friend’s father used to play snooker years back and he suggested the idea to me about a year ago but back then I wasn’t all that serious about snooker. But now I have a cue for yourself I’m warming to the idea as he says it’s much easier and less can go wrong. Also what interests me is mushrooming a tip is supposed to be easier on a lathe, is this true?

i have tried fitting tips on a latjhe it takes me longer to get the cue into the lathe than it would take me to fit a tip by hand.

I dont think you can get a lathe for 50 pounds that would really work well anyway.
How do you trim your tip on a wood lathe anyway? You will need to mount some cutting tool and a tool post somehow. After all the modification, I doubt you can really do a better job than if you do it by hand.
The only thing I think a lathe can do for you in regard to tip installation that you cant really do by hand is if the ferrule needs to be re-faced real bad because someone messed it up before you. But a wood lathe, especially something that cheap, will not work well in such incident anyway.
There are some mini metal lathes made in China that you can buy for about $500USD. You can build a rest at one end to support the shaft so that would work for your tip, ferrule...etc. That is the cheapest one that works that I know.

wow...thinks its good...just wait till you put your taper cue shaft into a parallel 3 jaw chuck,,no supoort at the rear of the lathe shaft,,bye bye cue

What is the problem here? I’ve asked for some advice and all I'm getting is cynical remarks and sarcastic comments. I'd prefer it if advice was given in a manner which reflects this forums reputation. I'm not out to make enemies here just here to talk about all things snooker related. If you think something is a bad idea then say so in a helpful manner not with an elitist attitude that some have. In response to subzer0's comment - I'm sure something can be done/made to support the cue at the back of the lathe. I was chatting to my mates dad about this issue and we thought about making something ourselves to fix this problem.

I would just like to say that this lathe idea is not definite. Its something I'm looking into with some friends so the sarcastic comments are not warranted at all so can this stop and advice/experience be given.
