I thought Mahogany at first as theres probably far more old cues around made with that but one quick look at the samples at that site and one of padauk seemed closer. Wood recognition can be an art in itself. Hope you find out not knowing can drive you mad

      Hi Gary,

It's hard to tell from the photo. It seems like stained maple to me.

Purpleheart is actually purple in colour. Bloodwood is really blood red.

Surf the web with key words "exotic wood" to locate some of the wood suppliers and view the photos they provided.

      Thanks,

you're right about bloodwood, which does have a very strong red colour from the start, but purpleheart goes purple if exposed to ultraviolet (at least the stuff i've seen tends to be like that). in it's 'cut' state it can be a very bland 'brownish' colour, and remain that way depending on how it's finished.

my first guess was, in fact, that it IS purpleheart (or a variety) cos the grain looks similar. but to be honest, it could be anything. except stained maple...

i used some old threshold wood to splice one of the very first cues i made, and it was exactly like the pic, so whatever that was, i reckon is what the cue is made out from.

thats why i said purple heart in the 1st reply as i have a cue with a large purple heart splice and its got the same grain a very slight wavy look.

i noticed. and thought it was a good call. that's why i didn't stick my oar in until i needed to point out that purpleheart wasn't always purple as some of the pictures you see.

There's probably rarer wood that'll fetch a higher price and exceptionally pretty pieces of burl that fetch a premium but generally used for cuemaking I doubt there's a more expensive wood used than Snakewood. Cues made from it(whole butt and splices)new can cost in excess of £600.
