Most of the top pros use cues with weights of 17 - 18 oz. Playing on superfine cloths they do not need heavy cues to get the cue ball to move around.
I've just bought a new cue from Trevor White and its exactly 17oz and feels perfect, I think that the balance is more important than the weight.

I do agree with you, that you dont need a cue over the 18oz mark while playing on these fine cloths, I have just had a second hand match cloth put on the family table and its like lightening, so much so that I think the white slides along the bed on times if hit pretty hard. Also I had thicker cloth put on the cushions and the white dont come off at some funny angles, I hope it gets better with age. And one small point about Pros using lighter cues, John Parris told me that Ronnie uses a 18.75oz cue or was he just keeping me happy and it is a few ozs lighter :snooker:
I think that Ronnie changes the spec on his cue more times than he changes his shirts!! John told me that he is constantly altering tip size (last I heard it was 9.6mm) and length (last I heard it was 58 1/8th) and last time I spoke to John about a year ago the weight was 18.3oz.
Incidentally, Son Of Cliff, I have just bought a lovely old newpaper photo of your old man taken in 1952 (year I was born) when a young Cliff Wilson was standing next to Marcus Owen!!

Yes I know Ronnie likes to alter things a bit, looking for perfection. Its amazing how he finds his form so quick with another cue.
1952 that means he was only 18 when the picture was taken I would love to be able to see it. I have got a video with him at 18 playing with Joe Davis strange to see the old man looking so thin
