  • Butt Joints

Hi all. I was just wondering, if a cue is made without a butt joint for extensions, does it affect the cue in any way if one was fitted?

Many Thanks in advance for all replies.

it will weight a fraction more (12-18g) but other than that no.

The balance would be different if it did not have it before.

not a great deal. remember that a hole is being drilled (wood being drilled OUT) and being replaced with a small female brass fitting.
So, like ADR said, not a great deal of weight.

          Small changes make big differences

Although it may not be much difference in weight a small amount makes a big amount of difference.

Talking from my experience I remember purchasing a john parris master cue it played lovely and the reaction I got when striking the cue ball felt so sweet.

I then decided to get a joint put into the butt and it never played the same. I kept telling myself it was all in my mind but after a few practice sessions it just felt like a completely different cue.

I took it back to John who told me it shouldn't make any difference. He then proceeded to hit a few shots with the cue and as a result let me exchange it for a ambassador as for some reason he couldn't got much reaction from the cue ball, not that John's a great player anyway

If it didn't make that much difference I'm sure Matthew Stevens would have had a hole drilled in his cue but he still continues to use a screw on extension for his cue, and I don't blame him as I think the cue never plays the same when you fit a butt joint.

I have a cue that originally had a centre joint and a 3/4 joint.

Had it converted to accept a mini-butt as well.

            There was no noticable difference.

This is very very unlikely, although you may have been unlucky in that it did affect this particular cue in some slight way. The butt joints I use add approximately 3/8 of an ounce (not including the removal of any timber, which is negligable anyway). This is not an amount which would normally affect the playing characteristics of a cue, but, it would be noticeable to someone who had become very accustomed to the weight as it was, even though it would be a small variation.

As for Matthew, he has used that old tatty wooden extension for as long as I can remember, and I have known him since he was perhaps 13 years old. I think it's just a case of him being used to using his cue this way and no more than that.

My view of it would be that if a player wants to get one fitted, they can do so without much fear of it ruining their cue. At the end of the day, if they try it and find they don't like it, it's easily removed again.

Thanks for all replies. The thing is that I just purchased a unique cue from bitter. Just waiting for it to come through and unsure if it has butt joint or not. Didn't bother asking if it did. I'd rather just wait and see because thats just me.

Seems most answers lean towards not making much difference so I will have to see I feel about the change.
