  • What glue is best for tips

Hi i would like to know what is the best way to , glue the tip on a cue , i have used super glue gel , and araldite , but is there a new product that can do a better job . i feel super glue, even the gel is brittle , [i have a way of putting my tips on that may be unorthadox ] . Has any body tried for example no more nails , or any of the hundreds of other products . it would be great if a panacea was found that could provide that little bit of cushoning that is lacking since the demise of wafers .

PS , how i put my tip on , I do all the usual sanding , i put small amount of gell on top then place tip on and spin it round the top , then i before it sets take tip off, and let it dry for a few seconds , then i lightly sand the tip , over the glue that is on it , re glue and stick on . i have never had a tip come off as it ,gives the glue something to bite against , rather than just applying one drop and pressing . but as my post suggests is there a better product for feel .

Evostick for me, never had one fall off :snooker: tip never goes hard due to the glue. I even have to cut the old tips off with a stanley knife, just follow the instructions on the pack.

            Super glue gel seems best.
Dad uses araldite but I think it takes too long and needs a clamp.
            I think Craftsman use evostick.
I lot of people still swear by old super glue.

Crushed up bluebell bulbs. Or possibly superglue - gel stuff works well, or plain ol superglue, can be a bit runny but you just have to be careful.

Used to use araldite which is fine but takes time to mix, plus it smells disgusting. Good though because its easy to apply and doesn't stick straight away like super glue, especially if you need to be accurate with fitting the tip. Like everyone else though superglue gel is quicker and its all you need really.

I do my tips the same way, which is to let the glue dried on the back of the tip first, then sand it down and glue it on the ferrule/tip. I think other than the glue, it is important to face the surfaces properly to avoid the tip from popping off.

If you like something with better feel, may be you can try something called Gorilla glue. It needs a bit of moisture as a catalyst, and takes 24 hours to dry. Dont use too much, because it expands a bit when setting.

I use Loctite prism 454 super glue gel. Very happy with it. Usually store it in the fridge.

loctite super glue gel, but always use activator on the tip, don't spray ondirectly, put on to a cotton wool bud first then dab on.
Sticks like **** so don't position incoorectly! :snooker:

I've only retipped my cue four times but here's my experience - feel free to laugh ...

first time ... I bought Tweeten's 10min tip cement ... it seemed to hold the tip but it fell off after say 30 shots ...

second time ... tried the same Tweeten's tip cement but followed the instructions this time ... it lasted 7 days but popped off on a vital shot when I was in a very strong position to beat the best player at my local pub at pool ...

so I gave up with the 10min cement and switched to superglue gel which is great - you are guaranteed your tip won't fall off ... the only problem is you only have one chance to fit it dead centre - and with my big hands and poor eyesight, I've never managed it ...

that in itself isn't a disaster - tips are normally oversized so if you fit it off-centre it just means you have more filing to do ...

but I've heard people can fit an exactly sized tip exactly dead-centre on the ferrule using superglue ... how? is there a special tool I don't know about?

What he said - practice. Also dont put too much glue on, sounds obvious but too much will give it a slight tendency to slide out of position more.

It's a bit of a myth that different glues will provide a different feel to a cue/tip.. whatever.

The simple truth is that if it sticks the tip on, without causing any further damage, then the job is done. Speaking from my own experience, I find using super glues (especialy the quality industrial types) are the best thing you can use to get it done quickly, reliably and are cost effective. What I will say is that there are 'some' super glues which really don't cut it when you bond leather, so these are kind of hopeless for tips.

As has already been said here, for most poeple wanting to do their own tips, the Loctite products are arguably the best you'll get without spending on larger more industrial sized bottles, so I would say stick with that, be it liquid or gel, it's very good.

Finally, what Qubit says above is a great point to remember...."Do not put too much on".
A tiny droplet is all that is required, and, if you dab the tip against the drop of glue in the centre of the ferrule, then spread the glue about with the tip, it might surprise people just how long you have to re-position the tip to centre it.

How you go about it from there is open to other debates, but at least your tip will be stuck to the cue properly.
