    a tape measure ?

if the cue you are using at the minute is 57 inches or longer that will do for your new cue

Yes, I agree, if you are 'average' height then any cue length from 57in to 58in should be perfect. My advice would be 57 1/2in!!

I once had a days tuition at the Snooker Academy and I was using one of Dominic Dales old cues at that time and it was 57 3/4in long. My instructor looked at my stance and put me in the correct cueing position and told me that he would prefer it if I used a cue that was 1/2in longer!! So......I spent the next 2 years trying out cues that were around 58 1/2in long. Eventually I went to Del Hills house for tuition and he proved to me that I could use a 57 1/2in cue without any problems and holding the cue in the correct place there was still almost one inch of cue at the end of my grip. I am 6ft 2in tall.

So......in my opinion, 57 1/2in is the perfect length.

It's not just your height that matters when selecting the right length of cue, some have longer arms then others and therefore need a longer cue or visa versa, any good coach should be able to tell you as you cue up what the right length of cue for you to use is, Snooker & Billiards are games were you want to be as compact as possible, and with extensions available at almost any length this days and easily fitted, a lot of professionals take advantage of that and use as short a cue as they can and a 5, 6 or7" short butt for the those shots that are a bit hard to reach, a shorter more compact cue will certainly allow for more control around the black where touch is what you want then a cue you have to hold 3 - 4 inches inside the end of the butt anyway, experiment around to see whats best for you, keep the cue makers busy shortening and lengthening cues, they have to eat as well.
