  • S. Ascott (or Abcott) - Leytonstowe - London

I have just recieved a cue with a very rubbed off badge.

All i can make out in the light is S.Ascott or Abcott around the top with what seems Leytonstowe in the center and London running round the bottom of the badge.

It is a very old maple cue which seems to have been retapered to 8mm with handspliced ebony butt and a single front splice of birdseye maple.

Im interested to know more as I myself have never heard of the maker. Maybe 100-uper knows?

Thanks for any help that can be given.

The Ascott family business was established by Joseph Ascott in 1871, the first reference to an address which I can actually date is in 1909 when they traded as J Ascott & Co from 3, Bishopsgate Street Without, London. This company subsequently moved to Martin Street, Stratford, London E15.

In 1926 there seems to have been a major change, possibly a family split, with one branch becoming Ascott & Fitt operating from 105-107 The Grove, Stratford, London, E.15, the other operated as S. Ascott & Sons, who were based at 869 High Road Leytonstone (after 1928). As far as I am aware the latter company dealt mainly in requisites while the former inherited the billiard table building business. I don't have any record of either company surviving the second world war, so would assume that your cue dates from the 1930's.

        Hope this helps
