  • Adding weight to cue

    Hi
I'm started to make cues for a hobby and one thing I want to do is add extra weight, I've looked at lead, brass and tungsten all with varying degrees of success.

Whats the best material and method of adding weight to a cue?

To add weight I drill and plug the shaft with lead before the splices are glued on, then when the cue is 0.5mm oversize I drill up the butt and screw in a length of threaded stainless steel bar to balance it after first attaching the bar to the cue with an elastic band in the place where it balances so I know how far up the butt I need to drill. Other makers have their own methods but this is mine for one piece cues, for 3/4 split cues any weight needing to be added is done when drilling to fit the joint as I fit the joint on the balance point because the butt is solid hardwood rather than spliced on so adds more weight naturally.
Plough your own furrow mate and good luck.

There are videos on your tube of Andy Hunter showing you how to do this.

I don't add any weight to my cues until I have completed the butt of the cue fully. This makes it easier to get the weight exactly right if you are making it to a certain spec else you are guessing.

I then use a 18" gun drill to bore from the bottom of the butt up to the point where I need to add the lead slug anywhere from 14"-16" usually. I then use a hardwood dowel to plug the hole once the slug is in place and glued.
