Has anyone ever heard of anyone adapting their own wood cushions to steel?? Just having a quick look at 10mm steel sheet, approx 250 quid for a 8’x4’ sheet of the stuff, although I’m not sure on the best way of cutting this up accurately.... maybe that is where the costs escalate? Anyways, if I could get 6 strips of 10mm sheet I think I could probably recess them into my wood cushions quite easily... The question is, would all this be worth the time and effort? I could probably convert a wood cushion table to steel for around ?1200, including blocks, rubber and cloth etc.. still cheaper than buying a new set at 2k

You can Steve, on youtube there is a wiraka table showing them recovering the cushions with the steel in the cushion itself ,this was also done many years but it was the B&W version that took off ,bit like VHS v Betamax thingy (showing my age here ).Slate was used in some tables too and this worked as well as steel .Ronnie's table that he tows around for exhibitions is a Wiraka but looks like a wood cushion table due to the angled cut on the cushions ,but its not its a steel cushion ,check out his 147 in Woodhall spa Lincolnshire .I think you could do it ,be a bit of a project and you would still keep your own wood freezes and pocket plates .

Another thing you could do is contact Geoff Large or Maryfield they often have old Riley or BCE plates cushions and steels in ,you could then relish the cushions to your own table finish ,BCE steels and cushions will fit the Riley ( I have seen it done ),keep yer old cushions in the loft or somewhere ,so the table could always be taken back to original .I think the BCE cushions and pocket plates on the Riley frame would look great.
