  • Reclothing - How Often?

In my social club we have 3 snooker tables that all get reclothed every 18months. However after keeping our eyes on the money that goes in each light meter we have deducted that understandably the match table gets used a lot more than the others.
On average it gets around 45 hours of play per week, another gets around 35 hours p/w and the one that is in the worst spot gets around 20 hours p/w.
That means that the match table gets around 3500 hours of play between each recloth, whereas the worst table gets less than half that.
Does anyone know what is an average amount of playing time before a recloth should be considered?
Towards the end of a 18 month cycle, the match table does start looking a bit tatty and hardly any nap

Iā€™m no expert but I guess it will depend upon certain aspects like what cloth is normally used both on the match table ( finer ?) and the others .
I think it also depends on what type of players are using the table , how often they are cleaned etc ?.
Im sure there is a more scientific approach than that but those above factors will make a difference on what condition the table will be in over a certain time period .

I think given the current times most members of social clubs with tables would be happy to get a new cloth every 18 months, if it's financially viable for the club. If the cloth is stretched after 6 months of the fitting it will make it last and play better for longer so probably up to 2 years. It's normally more cost effective when a fitter is onsite to do more than one table at a time. Look for cost options where you could get the 2 main tables done together and then if you get the fitter back to stretch them he could do the least used table at that time. Maybe even swap a cloth to the least used table in the bad spot when doing the stretch so it at least gets a bit of an upgrade and save a few quid that way.

The fitters will be feeling the pinch of less trade too so look to bundle these tasks together to save on cost. šŸ˜‰

Thanks for your advice chaps. we always use a fast cloth on the tables and they all get cleaned at least once a week, sometimes 2 if there are important matches to be played.
We always get the fitters to do all the tables at once, but the idea of reusing the least used cloth again is a good one.
The club is financially secure and has several thousand members so reclothing the most used table is not an issue if needed
I was just wondering if 45 hours of play a week is excessive compared to most clubs, and should this be an annual recloth rather than 18 months, or is 12 months not really a done thing??

I think it depends on how your particular cloth is wearing. You can normally work out when tables need reclothing just by how they look and play . I know of one club I play at that uses superfine cloths and they have them redone every 12 months without the same usage you are getting. The standard of players is higher though and they also hold regional amateur comps etc.

45 hours a week on one table in a club is quite excessive I would say these days.
