        Steel Block cushions

Burroughes and Watts introduced the steel block cushion. The purpose of which is to provide a truer, more consistent and quieter bounce from the cushion. It comprises a steel plate bolted directly to the cushion with the cushion block screwed to this plate. The cushion rubber is glued to this block and supported by a fillet of wood (SUPPORT FILLET). A polished wooden cushion capping or frieze is bolted to the steel to complete the cushion. This type of cushion is standard on all WSA Tables used in competition.

Buyers beware cheaper Chinese imported tables fitted with steel block cushions. There are steel blocks and then there are Chinese steel blocks. These have lighter steel plates, inferior imported rubber and the cushion frieze and undeframe of the tables are made form inferior timbers, prone to warping and splitting, due to not being kiln dried to our humidity level. Further exacerbated by central heating drying out the timbers

If buying a steel block table, insist on it being UK made, with genuine Northern rubbers. You wouldn`t buy a Ferrari and put remoulds on it, would you!

Please see attached cross section picture of steel block cushion construction.
