John Taylor tables , Iv'e seen a few in my time as a billiard fitter mainly up north of England mainly Leeds area and into Scotland , they are a Scottish firm I believe , Browns antiques have one for sale in near mint condition in oak with two matching cue racks and scorboard and it is POA so no guideline on price there . but would expect it to be in the region of £7500 knowing the price of some tables Browns have sold when refurbished .
I have seen John Taylor tables sell on ebay for a few hundred pounds , they are not one of the well known table manufacturers this side of the Border , but must be the premier Table manufacturer of Scotland in its Day going on how many tables have been advertised on ebay over the years , they still crop up on there.
what people have to remember is the Market is flooded with full sized tables and it's a buyers Market , only ornate or historical tables fetch top Money , Condition is everything and if it requires a rerubber recover re polish nets leathers etc , then the selling price is going to be low , but with it being Oak this will prob add a few £'s on top of a Mahogany one , but its all down to condition and Moving costs .
A photo of the Table would be nice[/SIGPIC]http://www.gclbilliards.com

John Taylor & Son were a major retailer of household furnishings, based for most of their life at 110 Princes Street, Edinburgh which was something of a department store. Although they were established in 1825, the first reference I have to them actually manufacturing a billiard table comes in 1875. They additionally advertise themselves as "upholsterers, carvers and guiders" so I assume that the background is general cabinet making, although by 1900 they were also supplying, fabrics, curtains, and everything you could need for furnishing a home.
Based solely in Edinburgh they would have had limited geographic range as it would have been relatively expensive to send a team into England to install a table, especially as there were lots of good specialist manufacturers from Manchester onwards. Most of the reference I have for them relate to the supply of tables in Scotland and the North of England. I would guess that they wouldn't have a made a huge volume of tables as it was not a specialist area for them, and this may be why so few are seen. They became incorporated in 1898, so if the table plate makes reference to "Ltd" it is after this date.
Not sure when they ceased trading, but they were still making billiard tables the 1930's. Some time after 1932 moved from Princes Street to West Newington Place, also in Edinburgh, but not sure when. It may have been after the war. All billiard table manufacture stopped in England from 1942, and if they were still trading they must have concentrated on something else, as they don't appear again in my records.
Photos would also be of interest to me.
