  • Karnhem and hillman full size to wales

Today we have been on a little trip to Wales to install a full sized Fully reconditioned Karnhem and hillman table , the clients also had the new type of lighting to fully enjoy his retirement Boys Toy .
The clients also had an electric socket installed into the new build floor to enjoy underneath heating of the slate , of which I have advised to use 2 or 3 500watt oil filled radiators .
A very nice table and I must say nice clients to work for , who where always asking if we wanted Tea and food all day .

Yes I do Phil they are a no nonsense table easy to recover middle falls are very good to get the cloth round to form flat without adding damp hands to shrink to form when ironing , and i think they look nice with the repro tulip leg and scrolls , some people advertise the leg as a readed leg but it is a tulip leg .

they do have a few design faults like alloy pocket plates rather than Brass , but they are ok I've only seen one broken plate on all the K&Hillamn tables I have worked on which must be in the hundreds now .
I could tweak them a bit by adding adjustable muntins to the frame rather than the fixed type , but it's all extra cost at the end of the day .

I do not know the exact make of these lights but I recomend dextra lighting units for those on a budget , the ones in the photo's are around £400 which includes the fixings , the Dextra ones are around £100 the pair so a big saving , they look almost the same but are not to the same shape exactly , what you have to ask for is 5 foot modular lighting twin tubes in daylight or soft white .

the one's in the photo's are supllied by on cue lighting . through elston and hopkin . ......Rob of on cue also provides Free fitting if within a certain radius of leeds .

They made around 4 as far as I know this one is the buckingham , basicly they are all the same upper parts of slate and cushions only the frame differs , I have come across the turned leg with no tulip carved , the square leg , the tulip leg , and a one off larger turned leg . scrolls are either on or off depending on clients taste .
Adjustable muntins are a pair of metal brackets that is fitted each end of the central frame bearers , and are adjustable upwards by turning a bolt at each end of each muntin , making any slate sag impossible . or if it happens adjustable to get out .
You would need to dismantle the table to fit them .
most chinese tables now have these adjustable brackets on them ...like the star tables .

Well now you have Gary , and It is more common nowdays , due to all the mass production of tables around the 1980s that had no centre slate support that came right upto the slate and supported it , if you lay along plank of two inch wood over a 6ft span it will ebevntualy dip or bow downwards , the slate is exactley the same over a 5ft 6 inch span the centre begins to drop down over time , most modern tables with italian slate will have some sort of untrueness in the slate either due to just machine milling rather tha hand floating or slate sag .
and the most annoying thing is the customer or client always blame the fitter that their table is not level , never the manufacturer of the table who did not pay enough attention to detail when building them . I'm afraid Karnem and hillmans muntins do not meet the slate although they did hand float the slates .
I always pack the centre slate bearers if they are not adjustable , so at least the slate is supported when I fit a table that has these low muntin's.
But if given time and expenditure by the firm or client , I would convert the muntin's to adjustable ones on any table that is not built with them .

                          Geoff

Thanks Geoff for the information, yes I have already investigated the Dextra units (of several models), just was wondering on these at this install.
I will look into the lighting company for further details.
                            cheers
