He said wafer (see below). I should think that would cause even more problems.

In answer to the guy who asked why do we block, there are two answers really:
    1. The brushing removes dust etc. The block makes sure that every bit of nap is pointing the right way. Then the iron smooths it all down and makes it play well and look good.
    2. Second answer is Geoff recommends it. He knows more about tables than anybody else I know so I block mine.

Is there a suitable substitute for old cloth for blocking??

The reason i am asking is because i do not have an old off cut of cloth! I have a heap of rags and Microfiber materials etc and what would be the best sort of material to use when you do not have actual cloth for the block??

I have also read some people using the rag method have them slightly damp ( Not Wet ) and this also helps lay the nap. Is this true?
If it is called " Common sense " why is it so rare???

Anything that won't leave fibres would be OK. (So don't use recycled golden labrador skin). The nap on old cloth is good because the nap on it cleans the nap on your table but anything with a bit of texture would be OK. Just wrap it round the table brush. I have a block of oak about the size of a brick which works well.

Make a note to save the old bed cloth the first time you have your table recovered. Then you will be OK for ever!

I would imagine Microfiber would be the best and it does not leave anything behind.

What about making it slightly damp?? I am unsure whether or not i want to do this on my new Strachan and i am spewing i did not keep any of my old cloth!! Damn and lesson learnt!

              Cheers mate and no probs.

I am chasing up some cloth now from my fitter and he will drop some off maybe next week for me!! In the meantime i will use the Microfiber and see how it comes up. I just used it then for a bit on the back of the brush and it is better than not using it but there are still some stubborn finger marks in the nap near the Black ball spot which just don't want to lie down!! My cloth is VERY new as well and only a few weeks old.

I am still a bit wary of applying any Water/dampening at this stage!

do not use any water on the cloth , people say it brings the colour back , any dampness will make the cloth darker in colour but once dry it is back to normal , damping cloth will make the ball slow on the cloth , and will clump chalk dust together under the cloth and the ball hits this and rolls off true or snakes a lot , also if you damp then iron the cloth shrinks , if having a stretch of bed cloth in the future it will not stretch much .

                  Thanks Geoff and much appreciated.

I will steer clear of any water! Do you have any advice on the best material to use on the back of my brush to block it down? I am having trouble laying the Nap down in a few areas and my Cloth is only 3 weeks old Strachan 6811 and never had any Iron of any kind only brushing and very light vaccuming so far to suck up chalk dust.

Stubborn finger marks near the Black spot are proving hard to lay down flat and i have repeatedly blocked with different dry rags and brushed and while it is better it is not 100% flat! I have found that my sons old pyjama pants have worked the best so far and i just put the brush inside a leg of them and pulled it tight then blocked it down.

I have seen one club use a piece of flotex floor carpet as a napper , apparently he says the nap of the flotex fine comb's the nap of the cloth ...BUT never tried it myself although it was demonstrated to me and did an excellent job and much better than the normal old cloth used on a napper , it got the finger marks out more .
                    .
I was just a bit concerned if it would wear the cloth through though if over used ?

any type of cloth that will not shed fibres onto the bed cloth will be OK , I am afraid it will be look around the fabric shops and see that they have , you only need a piece about 18 inch by 18 inch .
but any cloth that is coming off a pool or snooker table is ideal .

just ran a search on Ebay Australia and cannot believe the chines are not importing them , but this is the lowest cost one I can find for you to buy in the UK http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pool-snoo...10847657285%26

I did a quick search as well but not much here in Oz sadly. My usual supplier sells the Peradon one but it is a bit pricey at $78 but when you factor in postage $100 is more like it delivered to your door. Grrrrrr

                      http://sharpsnooker.com.au/products/...g-cloth-block/

I also want an Iron but that is not cheap either and i am debating whether or not i buy a brand new house hold dry iron or not.

the Peradon napper is £31 here in the Uk ...so you are paying around £24 for postage from your Australian supplier , try looking on Uk ebay and ask how much postage to Australia , I doubt it will be much less though .

They have recovered some of the tables in our club, but they hardly get cleaned, I was considering brushing and blocking the table I play on before I start, (if they will let me ,and if they have a block, I have never seen them use one just brushed and ironed)could you tell me roughly how long it would take, as I no doubt will have to pay for the light while I'm doing it.

Cheers JRC, I think I will ask about doing this, I can't see the owner not letting me he's a good lad just a bit disinterested lol, doesn't play or have any interest in the game, but a right nice fella.

Mind you if they hardly get cleaned as you say, it may take a lot longer the 1st time, but it's worth it
