  • Advice on potting shed please

I'm hopefully moving house very soon if all goes to plan, it has quite a big garden so fancied a little place where I can get away from the wife lol. my budget is pretty tight so was looking on ebay for a nice shed big enough for a pool table and came accross this 16x12 wooden summer house http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/120853196097

So what I suppose I'm asking is this suitable and sturdy enough to put a table in or would I be better off looking at something else. Any advice appreciated thanks

I'm no expert but we've been looking at BBQ huts for our garden so have had a look round log cabin places. One important thing is to make sure you have a strong level base to put the shed on. The log cabins are all made with much thicker timbers, walls are normally 45mm compared to 12mm in your link, and they are also double glazed, I would think that shed would be pretty cold in the winter unless you could insulate it or have good heating, cold and damp conditions are not good for a pool table and it will play a lot slower. You would have to make sure the floor was strong enough to take the weight of the table and add extra bearers as required (32X44 at 400mm centres doesn't sound that strong to me), maybe also sheet the floor with thick ply before laying the t&g so that the floor is not bouncy as you walk. There is a lot of glass area in that shed too which would needs some kind of blinds if you were playing during the daytime.

Ideally you need a concrete base to sit the shed on. And a good source of heating through the colder months is a must I would also fit the draft strips around the doors if its not got them and make sure its put together proper no gaps at the joints make sure its completely sealed for the elements.

        Hi Dave,
16x12 is too small even if you are going for 6x3 Table m8! as the table width Min 3ft + Cue approx 5ft each side = Min 13ft + at a very least!

I would personally go for 7x4ft Table and try and go for 20ftx16ft Min so you have enough space right around the table m8.

when you do find a good solid summerhouse with solid timbers don't forget to take in account the cost of concrete and labour, electric supply to it and labour, then you have to insulate properly, these jobs can add up to more then the building itself, then the table which I don't think come cheap either.

You can pick up the tables quite cheaply especially if you goto trecco bay after tourny ends they sell them for £400 and they are brand new tables with new cloths that week!...my friend bought one 2 yrs ago £400 and they are stunning!

it is not wide enough mate. also as said concrete floor is needed for a heavy table.

Dave there are folk on here that have tables in wooden buildings, I can't remember who they are, but it can be done, and must be far cheaper than a brick one. Do the foundations yourself, just take your time and you will get there.

Why not get your base down now which is the main thing and when you have saved up enough money get a good chippy who haven't got any work on one week to come and erect a timber structure for you.
a concrete base shouldn't cost no more then £900 with labour or £600 if you do it yourself which I don't think you could do yourself tbh as you will need a couple on the barrow and someone levelling it out

have a look at this link , the first table is in a log cabin in Lincolnshire , he paid around £6000 for the cabin and base and also included a Carpenter to erect the Cabin that was supplied flat packed all electrics and concrete base .
