Believe it or not , it is one of the most asked questions when we are out and about around the clubs .

I have just taken a job on where I am opening pockets from 3.5 inch at the fall to 3.3/4 inch , I did ask the person ( Steve ) who owned the table Why ? as I knew he played to a decent standard around the clubs and the local league and even has finals played on his table , Photo link below of pocket opening at 3.5 inch

His reply , he has just qualified as a coach last year and he will be teaching mainly younger players on the art of playing , now the feedback he got from professional coaches where to open the pockets up to get them more interested in the game , there is nothing worse than playing on tight pockets and not being able to rack up a few points because the openings are too tight for a learner or novice player , and there are more average to poor players out there than good players who request match play pockets .
And I see this all the time , good players wanting tight pockets and the majority wanting large openings at the fall .

many years ago I was watching a young player pot balls and racking up decent breaks in the small town of Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire , I looked at the table and the pocket openings where close to 4 inch at the fall , I said the teenager who looked about 14 or 15 , you will never make it as a professional playing on a table with bucket pockets like this one .
his name was Gary Wilkinson , and I think he was ranked 5th in the rankings at one time .

Is the ball in that photo a pool ball . The ball looks very small compared to the cushions

Geoff, how do you measure the 3.5? Do you put your ruler on the bed of the table or on the cushion rail? Where exactly is "the fall"?

that´s the point, as a beginner player tight pockets leads to poor positional play because you focus too much on potting the ball. thats why driving schools dont have ferraris

In replay to the question where do you measure the width of the pocket opening .

and where the face of the ball is touching the inner curve of the fall , measure across the top of the gap from above

if the ball is not here just measure between the jaws in line with the most furthest point of the fall into the table .
