  • Which cloth?

Hello all. I will have to get the rubbers and cloth renewed on my table sometime soon. I take it that Strachan cloth is the way to go, But wondering which type is the best?
Which type/weight do they use on the championship tables?
I've seen 28oz up to 34oz cloth weights advertised - how much differently do they play?
If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

I'm not sure of the actual weight but the cloth you see used on most WSA tournaments is a no.10 Strachan cloth. Its very silky and has hardly any nap compared to the thick 28oz+ cloths most club tables usually have. They are like playing on ice they are that quick and take some getting used to.

Unfortunately though they wear pretty quickly and are not really cost effective unless you are prepared to get a new one every 4-6 months.

Simonis Worsted Cloth gives you a surface so smooth and flat that you never need to overpower a shot to get the distance.
I find the ball spin is consistent and roll is accurate, supporting you on those delicate little booma shots letting you run the full table. It has been on tournament tables all around the world for generations

Thanks for the replies.Cueman - found only a couple of related links to the strachan no. 10 championship cloth and it says it is 32oz weight - heavier than I thought it would be, but it does say 'double cut' whatever that means.
Peggy - have never heard of the simonis cloth but I'll look around the net and see what I can find.
        Cheers

Hi there. As previously explained the pro cloth that they use is a strachan standard #10. Although the next grade down is a strachan 6811. This cloth has a slightly more noticable nap, but gives quite a decent speed, without the drawbacks of the #10, which would cost a small fortune to keep replacing. Then of course you have the strachan match(gold) cloth that they fit to most club tables and to be quite honest they might as well have laid a carpet for how slow they are.
                Cheap and Cheerful! 😄

So far as the Milliken West of England style cloth is concerned:

No 10, WSA specified. Difficult to fit, unreliable and a fit once and throw away. Very dependent on local climate. In ideal conditions, heated tables and so on, very fast and responsive to ball control. The construction of this cloth is quite different from the 6811 variations and does not wear too well.

6811, several grades. The top one Select, is just what it says and is selected from rolls already made. Not as fast as No 10 when newly fitted, but easier to fit. Then comes Gold Tournament, then Silver all 6811s but (unlike the competition who reject cloth that doesn't make the grade) the lesser cloth grades can be any weight and any speed. These cloths tend to slacken off over time and need re-tensioning to maintain their speed.

A W Hainsworth do a cloth (Match) with some of the better characteristics of the No 10 but is easier to fit and maintains its consistency better in different climate conditions. They also do a club cloth (Smart) that is equivalent for the higher grades of 6811. The Match cloth doesn't lose its tension over time so doesn't require stretching during its lifetime and is harder wearing than No 10 and 6811 Select.

So do you suggest strachan 6811 or hainsworth match cloth?Which one will play better for longer?

Is this the best 6811 or is any other better?

It is the weight in ounces of a square yard of cloth. God bless the Empire. None of that metric nonsense here!
