I have a pool table at home and did quite a lot of looking before I bought.
I don't know about yank spec though.
I wouldn't bother to buy a non slate table myself.

You can sometimes get great deals on good tables after the big county do's at Yarmouth or after comps at Reighton sands. They get loads in for the games then can't store them.
You just contact the organizers before hand (you need to get in early as many ask about them).

Other than that you can get refurbished pub tables for less than those from argos. Best to find someone near you but if you are struggling pm me.

In the end I got mine from a place in Oldham but that is a dining one that is slate so was more expensive.
