    2010 Nottingham Grand Prix

Event 2 - Sunday February 21st, Pegasus Snooker Club

Superb Walker Makes First Grand-Prix Century

Awaking to a blanket of white snow outside my window I rather foolishly considered cancelling this event but with my mobile phone constantly bleeping and ringing I soon realised it would take more than an inch of snow to stop Nottinghamshire's finest playing the game they love. 23 players turned out in what proved to be a very high quality tournament with the first century being crafted by Mansfield's Ashley Walker in one of the opening group matches. His opponent Stewart Crosswell could only watch on in admiration as Walker made his intentions known by firing in the superb 126 break which he quickly followed up with a knock of 67 to see off a shellshocked Crosswell. Elsewhere fellow Mansfield potters Gavin Shirley and Dave Bolton were also making their presence felt knocking in breaks of 55 & 46 respectively on their way to progressing from Group B before being joined by Lee Crombie whose knock of 54 was enough to see off Yas Abbas in a play-off. Last months winner Chris Winter and Stoke-on-Trent's Jason Stockton both qualified from Group C whilst Sean Croft enjoyed a notable win in group D against James Booth. Group E was won by Danny Castel-Nuovo whilst suprise non qualifiers from the last event, James Moore and Wayne Martin made no mistake this time to progress from Group F. Nav Hussain, last months finalist was the suprise non qualifier from group G where Stuart Ross and Zed Zubair qualified at his expense.

The last 16 saw Chris Brooks defeat Lee Crombie whilst Chris Winter stepped up a gear making breaks of 60 & 43 to see off Zed Zubair. Sean Croft's run came to an end against the dangerous Jason Stockton who enjoyed runs of 42,35 & 36 in a two nil win, a scoreline repeated in the match between Ashley Walker and Gavin Shirley with the excellent Walker making a modest 96 break! The remaining matches all went to a deciding frame, Danny Castel-Nuovo edged past Stewart Crosswell whilst James Booth almost got the better of BCI's talisman James Moore. Long Eaton's Stuart Ross came out on top of a tactical epic against Jamie Sampson and Wayne Martin started to find some form making breaks of 38 & 31 to see off Dave Bolton.

In the quarter-finals Chris Winter played some wonderful snooker in the pick of the ties against James Moore making breaks of 83 & 60 to book his place in the semi-finals. In the other matches, Chris Brooks came from behind to beat Jason Stockton whilst Ashley Walker proved too strong for Stuart Ross. Wayne Martin continued to impress making breaks of 50,34 & 32 to bag the final semi-final place at the expense of fellow Pegasus clubmate Danny Castel-Nuovo.

In the Semi-Finals Chris Winter made it back to back final appearances with a scrappy two nil win against Wayne Martin whilst the match between Ashley Walker and Chris Brooks went down to the deciding frame with the Mansfield man edging it.

If perhaps the semi-finals were a little flat the final certainly didn't dissappoint with Ashley Walker and Chris Winter (who was trying to make it back-to-back tournament wins) both playing some great snooker. Walker won the opening frame and was soon in the driving seat at two nil after making an excellent break of 64. Lesser players may have crumbled with Walker looking unstoppable but Event 1 winner Chris Winter has a superb temperament and dug deep in the 3rd frame making a crucial break of 32 before seeing out the frame to reduce his arrears. An excellent long red started Winter on another run of 32 in the 4th frame but sadly the promising break came to an end with a slight positional error leaving the cue ball stuck in the pack which made the next red very miss-able. Walker hit back with a twenty something break to get himself back in the frame before both players failed to win the frame with good scoring opportunities as the frame got a little twitchy. Walker finally got over the line with a solid 20 something break to seal a 3-1 win in what was a brilliant final.

The Ranking list and high break board has now been updated. Chris Winter tops the ranking list whilst Ashley Walker's high break is set to pay out £126 should it not be beaten. Thanks to everyone who played on Sunday for what was our highest turnout so far and we have managed to bank £150 which brings the Finals Prize Fund up to £250. Once again a very special thanks to Wayne Martin for running the event in my absence and to all the Pegasus staff.

I look forward to seeing you all again on March 21st for event 3.

I guess it depends on where you are. When I was in Britain in January there was a warning for snow on the BBC. It said 'Heavy Snowfall Warning' and then went on to say 2-5cm possible.

Where I come from, 2-5cm is a 'light dusting' however I will admit it costs me more to run my car in winter since I buy snow tires, which the average British driver wouldn't need. Along with the windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze.

Congratulations on having a successful tournament in Nottingham. I used to live just outside Leicester and if I was still there you could be sure I would have entered
