  • Players Fee's / Pro-Am Charity??

I would just like to ask if the players / agents that asked for the £350 - £2.500 appearance fee's / expenses to take part in the Charity pro-am in Brighton at the weekend, have the balls to come on here and explain their morals to us forum members.

Will you reveal your true identity? even though its not hard to work out who you are, and will you please explain why you think you are worth that much to play in a tournament, even though you charge less than half of that for an exhibition. Shame on you Greedy players!

I mean, Tiger Woods you are not. Past it players living on past fame you might be!

Maybe they'll reveal their identity if you reveal yours Madman!!!

Wheres the fun in that! Do you agree with them asking for these kinds of fee's for charity events then?

Rrrrrrrrrrrrr, i think you talking about the 'current world amateur champion'. Technically though not a pro again until the new season starts, but still taking the P--S though.

It is bloody annoying when that happens, unless it is a genuine cause, then i suppose you have to make exceptions under certain circumstances.:snooker:

You really do have a bee in your bonnet, don't you Madman, about these pros. I really don't think you're helping your cause though. *IF* I were a pro I think I'd be even less tempted to take part in these kinds of pro-ams after seeing this kind of reaction.

I agree it is disappointing to see so few supporting these kinds of events (including the likes of EASB's Paul Hunter English Open), but I really don't think an all out attack is the best way of encouraging them for the future.

Maybe not, but I still think it needed to be said.

I don't think this debate is being conducted in a productive way, so I have tried to stay out of it as much as possible. However I need to clear up a few things here.

1 - Alfie wasn't 2&1/2 hours late. We spoke to Alfie in advance and it was agreed that he would arrive at 2pm. That may have been the wrong thing to have done but he is in no way to blame for that. Unfortunatley he also got lost in Brighton, stuck in traffic and then got lost again. I know this was true because I was in constant contact with him. He eventually arrived 30 mins late and began his match immediately. Yes this was unfortunate but sometimes things don't go as planned, I'm sorry to anyone who may have had their match delayed. We have learned a lot from this event and will hopefully ensure it doesn't happen again. I am very gratefull to Alfie for coming, he conducted himself in a friendly and professional manner and thoroughly deserved to win the tournament. I will certainly be inviting him back to any pro-ams we hold in the future.

2 - In the thread that was recently deleted, I mentioned the agents asking for appearance fees or minimum earnings guarantees, although I refused to mention names. I actually also stated that certain agents seemed to politely brush off the suggestion without even consulting the players. What I was intending to comment on was more the agents than the players themselves. Barry Pinches for example, came because we had a direct contact to him through a friend, the same for Jimmy Robertson. Alfie Burden I contacted directly through facebook. If I had gone through their agents I would probably have gotten a different response. Making money for their client is the sole purpose of agents in any field, so their behaviour is understandable, but I have learned a valuable lesson not to waste my time with agents in the future.

3 - Before this tournament who had actually heard of the Castle Snooker Club?? Not many I'd bet. I think that played a considerable part in us not reaching full attendance. In my experience people who work in the average snooker club just don't look after the tables well enough, that is what makes us different. I'm sure many people were not interested in travelling a hundred miles to play on a wonky table with a ripped cloth and balls the size of marbles. Whenever I actually spoke to anyone who was considering coming the first things they asked was whether the tables and balls were any good. Of course I said they were excellent, but then I would wouldn't I? Now that everyone who actually attended knows this is genuinely true I am confident they will be back. Hopefully as the reputation of the club spreads, news of our tournaments will be passed by word of mouth directly to the players, and then they can make up their own minds. We got nothing but good feedback about the tables and I'm certain in the future the top players will come down.

4 - The snooker scene in Brighton is dead and we are determined to ressurect it, but it will take time. Out of the 44 people that came only FIVE of them were actually from Brighton! That's only two more than the number of pros! That was far more disappointing than anything else.

5 - I was actually rather glad when the previous thread was deleted as this was supposed to be a charity event and the debate was certainly not being held in that spirit. The purpose of the tournament was to raise money and awareness for the sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis, and not to become a moral test case against snooker players. Although the turnout of professionals was low everyone had a good time and we raised a load of cash for charity, therefore the event was a success. These are difficult times for the game and we all need to work together to help promote it, but we need to be constructive and not just insulting.

                  Thanks
                  Anthony

The reason i have a bee in my so called bonnet, is because clubs go to all this effort, players are always moaning about lack of competitions, a new club in town try do do something to put this right, charity event or not, i would still be P----D OFF, and its not even my club or near to it, and i dont even know the owners, but i just feel the professional fraternity let the club, fans down.

As for players seeing this kind of reaction, they would be less tempted to enter, well if more than 2 supported this worthy cause as well as playing in this tourny, they wouldn't of been slated. Why should 94 professionals get away without a bit of criticism. I feel its well warranted and so do many others,

So if you want to go around being the nice man, carry on. 2 out of 94 players entering, is a bloody disgrace, no matter what you say or think, and with the likes of you defending their pathetic excuses for not turning up, they will do the same again and again. If i hear them moan about lack of pro-ams again, then i will have a thread worth posting!!!!!!

If you re-read my last post I think you'll find that in no way shape or form did I defend their actions. I too think it's an extremely disappointing turnout, but there are good ways and not so good ways to highlight the problem, and try to get more to take part in future, and I really don't think your approach is the best.

                          Shocking

Top guy is Jimmy imo he is the true peoples champion both on and off the table , People may argue that Alex or Ronnie deserve that tag but for me Jimmy,s personality and professionalism , even after the major dissapintments , setbacks and bad luck he,s had in the game just sets him apart from the others , as much as i liked Higgins .

Shame on the other pro .
