I have heard a disturbing rumour this week and would be keen to find out if it's true or not.

Dave Brown currently tops this years rankings and quite rightly has been asked to represent England in Malta, from what I can gather this is a two man team event and his partner is looking likely to be John Hartley's father. I believe this is due to other players either not being asked, or turning down an offer to play as they don't want to fund the trip themselves.

IF this is true and not speculation then the EASB should be ashamed of themselves, what do the members pay their money for if the organisers made a mockery of the selection process.

IF this is untrue then please accept my apologies but in my experience with the EASB then it's highly likely this is the case and what a shame for Dave Brown, going all that way having to fork out hard earned money, never mind the loss in wages for the time off and he gets a partner who isn't good enough to compete.

    SHOCKING, BUT NO REAL SURPRISE

The ONLY reason that Phil Hartley might get asked to compete is IF all of the other seven players above him in the rankings turn down the opportunity to play. I know that some have turned down the chance and that others have not responded to any messages. Phil is 8th in the rankings and would only be playing for England by virtue of his own performance, NOT because of who his son is.

The selection criteria are laid down in black and white at the start of the season for all to see, and should Phil be selected to play, then it is all above board, because the criteria will have been followed. It is standard procedure to work down the ranking list until sufficient players are found to make up the required number. that has always been the case, and there certainly wouldn't be any preferential treatment.

You should be ashamed of yourself for spreading such rumours without checking your facts.

    SHOCKING BUT NO REAL SURPRISE!

The EASB is nothing short of a joke and will NEVER get another penny of my money until the jokers currently in charge do the right thing and jog on.

        I don't understand your gripe.

The selection procedures are clearly laid down: for both EBSA and IBSF Seniors the team will be the current Seniors Champion and the highest ranked eligible players from the Seniors Tour.

If the top ranked players don't want to take their place then players further down the list are asked IN ORDER. Phil would only be asked if the others above him have said no, after being asked.

Are you saying that just because he's John's dad that he should be skipped and #9 should be asked instead?

The current board which have largely been in place for five years, adopted fixed criteria for international selections from the outset, to get away from the previous ad hoc policies on selection, whereby favouritism was the order of the day.

Selection of any England player in recent years can be fully justifiable, and that will be the case should Phil Hartley play for England.

I can confirm that Phil Hartley, who is ranked No.8 has been invited to make up the English Seniors Team in Malta. As far as I know he is still to confirm whether he will accept or not. Should he decline then we will proceed down the rankings in order to select a partner for No.1 ranked player David Brown, who has already booked his flight. In these circumstances we feel that we have an obligation to proceed as far down the rankings as necessary rather than withdraw the English entry, which would cause financial loss to Mr. Brown.

All players ranked above Mr. Hartley have been invited to make up the team but have declined for various reasons, and the process has been conducted in strict accordance with the published selection criteria

The ranking list is also publicly available on the website.

If you feel that this process is unfair then as a member you have the right to register a compaint. The procedure for doing this can be found on our website.

If you need any further guidance on correct procedure then you can contact me directly.

I would just like to point out that this is a 3 man team event and as far as I am aware the closing date was the 27h February.

I do believe seniors as the title says (masters - over 40's) is 2 entries not 3

Is the 27th Feb date just for England to confirm a team will be attending?

Can the actual player names not be selected until last knockings, pending flights etc?

When is the European champ in Malta?

Can the selection not wait another week when the ranking list will likely change after the senior champs?

I was talking to someone yesterday who is going Simon and he says his flight is booked for the 28th and play is due on the 29th till the 7th and as you know senior champs is next sunday and the whole ranking list will change for sure.
I cannot answer your other questions

                      Thanks Kev,

Just for the record then Good luck Dave and Phil, fly the flag, Hope you play well and turn around the silly comments from earlier.

I was in the HI england team in 2005 and we suffered from groans from the snooker community due to some unknown names in the team (namely me and a couple others) but we literally came within one frame from winning it and nearly proved all wrong. Thats snooker!

Couldn't agree more Simon and i too wish them all the best and hope we are updated with scores here somehow, Obviously being from the same region as Phil i have seen and played him and he is more than capable in holding in his own.
For someone to reach the quarters in event two and the semi final in the third tour and make match breaks in that of 97,66,61,48,41 proves he can play and compete.
Selecting was done fairly going down the rankings asking in order so Phil has every right to represent his country.

Phil is a nice fella and although i don't know David im sure they will give it 110% and nothing more can be asked from them really.

Good Luck ENG and play the balls! :snooker:

And your support for our game in general is without precedent Simon. Good luck to you. F.

I just read this again and had to respond to it.

The EASB have run probably a record number of events this year. I know draws etc have been relatively late coming out and referees, I hear, have been given minimal time to be arranged but please see the work these guys do and more importantly that they are/have completed.

There will always be issues here and there but please feel free to help out '3x147man' if you feel so strongly about it all. By all means offer constructive helpful criticism and be thankful there are those that put the time in as well as holding down full time jobs!
