I agree thats kinda silly really. I guess they are trying to make money but to me its better to show it free over the internet so that it brings more veiwers to the sport in Canada.

Bring back Dariusz and live scoring, live streaming and live media that we provide at all EBSA events.

          :

I think they need more than Dariusz over there Janie. I have been informed of players having to share a bed and that the hotel room rates does not include breakfast, but that after some negotiations that breakfast was reluctantly included, but this morning when the Snooker delegation went for breakfast there was not any bread, butter or anything that would deem to be a breakfast also the hotel room rates are not what was advertised by IBSF. As regards live scoring where is the IBSF web master did he not set up a live scoring system or is he still in Australia? During other IBSF events the live scoring was non existent as the results did not appear on the IBSF site for a number of hours after everyone had seen them elsewhere. I do not think it would matter if the web master was in Canada because it seems that the Canadian association are in control of the live streaming and are going to charge for the privilege to watch. How can you promote the game if there is a charge to watch especially in the amateur game where the players are less known to the general public.

Just a little correction for Penalty. The Canadian Billiards & Snooker Association (CBSA) was not the prime mover on the Under-21s as it was done by a private individual as an attempt to encourage snooker in Canada, especially younger players where we are sadly lacking. I understand he used a lot of his own money and I don't begrudge him the opportunity to try and recoup some of his expenses.

On another string Billiard Quebec has announced they will be streaming the semi-finals and finals out of their site and they have done this before with much success.

The streaming we have now from the link on the IBSF website (the $7 one) I haven't used so I can't say whether that fee is for the whole tournament or a shorter period of time. I have no doubt the firm is genuine as they would have to have been approved by the organizer so I doubt if the credit cards would be at risk however I understand wayner's caution in dealing with an unknown website and can't fault anyone for that.

                Thanks for the correction Terry.
Can you tell me if the Canadian Association are involved in the hosting of this event or is it just 1 private individual. It is my understanding that to be able to host an event or more to the point to bid for 1 it has to be done by a member country of the IBSF. If the IBSF have given a private individual a tournament over a NGB who pay $300 I believe to be associated then it beggars belief.

                  Penalty:

Let me preface my remarks by saying I am not on the Executive of the CBSA nor can I speak for them in any way.

Given the geographics of Canada the CBSA assigns the actual grass roots organization of snooker & pool to the Provincial governing bodies and I am on the board of the Ontario Snooker Association. In order to communicate with the IBSF at all I'm required to go through the CBSA who are the only organization who can communicate with the IBSF.

Therefore I have to assume the organizer of this event, Mr Patrick Guigui first had to have a contract or an MOU with CBSA and the CBSA would have approached the IBSF to hold the Under 21s in Montreal and they would have had to pay the normal fee to the IBSF (which perhaps may have been originally put up by Mr Guigui, I don't know).

So I would assume the CBSA as the overall governing body for Canada would have final oversight of the IBSF Under 21 Championships as far as matters for Canada go, with the IBSF having final overall control.

As the organizer Mr Guigui would have been responsible for organizing the venue, tables, referees, accommodations and all the other little details required to hold a world championship tournament and I also assume the CBSA will have a representative present to take care of any national issues and I know the Director for Snooker for Canada (and a board member of CBSA) Mr Odie Willet was in Montreal for the opening ceremonies and likely Mr Steve Cooper who is President of the CBSA was also likely present and may still be there to provide CBSA oversight for the tournament.

As the Canadian Cue Sports Championships was held in mid-June during the final organizing weeks of the Under 21s all the CBSA board members would have been present at that and very busy so I also assume Mr Guigui was taking care of all the organizational details for the Under 21s and also most likely put up a fair chunk of his own money as I know he is a keen snooker enthusiast and is anxious to promote snooker in Canada, especially amongst younger players.

I'm certain everyone is trying their best and although there might be a few teething glitches along the way I believe in the final analysis it will be a successful tournament for all concerned. Remember the last IBSF tournament held in Canada was the World Championships in Calgary, Alberta back in the late 70's I believe and primarily due to the expenses involved not many Canadian representative have attended recent IBSF world tournaments as observers. Heck, we even have problems getting 2 players for the Open World's and 2 players for the Masters each year and also haven't had anyone in the Women's or the Under 21s in quite a few years.

I think in addition to this the IBSF has been holding these tournaments in countries where there is a reluctance to attend by the players who have qualified. For instance, last year in Syria for the World's we had one player there for the Open division, Fern Loyer, who did manage to qualify out of his round robin group but I don't believe we had anyone entered in the Masters. I would have entered the Masters and paid my expenses myself but I decided to wait for them to be held in a country where I would like to travel to, like maybe in Europe or Far East perhaps

Not sure if it's the first of the event as I can't find a high break board but Vincent Muldoon has just had a 102 break against Simon Lee from Hong in his 4-0 win. RIBSA will be trying to keep it's members up to date each day with the results and news right here . It's a new site so it's not all live yet but there should be plenty of news from the Under-21 over the next week or so.

Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon of Thailand had 102 on the first day against Cheng Peng of Canada. It would be great to see a high break board, usually there is a high break board on the IBSF website, but not at the moment.

Yep, I did at the time, thanks for that , just said I'd mention Li's one also.
Very surprising that they don't mention the breaks. At events like this it's one of the things the players look out for especially when in years gone by the highest break in each group got cash prizes.
