Ant McMahon 5-1 Sean Croft (14/09/11)

Ant McMahon proved too strong for Sean Croft in the opening match of The Masters.

Ant McMahon & Sean Croft in a relaxed mood prior to the match

Both players struggled to find their form but McMahon was able to make a few modest breaks to ease over the line. A 32 break from McMahon in frame 5 was the highest of the match and he will have to improve if he is going to trouble Adam Chester in the last 16.

        steve:

How come you're using the term 'Masters'? I thought that was reserved for players over 40yrs (and by the way, since I'm 66yrs I am disappointed I wasn't invited - granted covering the airfare might have been a problem for you)

          Hi Terry,

No real reason really, except I get bored of using "Open" or "Snooker Championship" and it was supposed to be for the best players in our region - the Masters of the green baize! Although judging by the snooker served up in the first match (highest break 32) I'm not so sure.

I'll give you plenty of notice before the next one, then perhaps you could save up for the airfare.

Sean Hopkin 5-1 Dave Jobling (16/09/11)

Sean Hopkin demonstrated why many believe he could go a long way in the game by putting on an assured performance against the highly rated Dave Jobling.

Dave Jobling congratulating Sean Hopkin on his terrific win

Hopkin's 42 clearance in frame 3 was particularly impressive, as was his composure and solid safety play. Wayne Martin will have to be on his game to beat him in the last 16, that's for sure.

Jobling didn't do a lot wrong. He made some decent breaks himself but he did not have much of the running and Hopkin's game was just that little bit stronger on the night.

Chris Keogan came back from 2-0 and 4-3 down to win his round one match in dramatic style.

Doncaster's Chris Keogan and Nottingham's Keith Holgate

Keith Holgate started the brighter of the two and opened up a 2-0 lead. He had a good chance to make it 3-0 but Keogan potted yellow through pink to pinch the frame and make it 2-1.

Keogan then won the fourth but Holgate took the fifth to lead 3-2. At this point, with the time approaching 10pm, the host offered to make it best of 7. Keogan declined the offer and he will be very glad he did. He won the next to make it 3-3 but Holgate dug in to win the next.

Up until the eighth frame the highest break had been a modest 42 from Holgate. Then, from absolutely nowhere, Keogan produced an awesome 106 break.

Keogan must surely have felt the more confident going into the deciding frame and it showed as he produced more fluent breakbuilding to ease over the line just before 11pm.

Keogan had a long journey home but he will be pleased with the win and he can now look forward to a tough match against Kyren Wilson in the last 16.

Brian Cox 5-3 Jordan Geldard (14/10/11)

This was a classic game of two halves. Geldard won the first three frames. Cox was having no run of the ball and seemed to be getting lots of kicks. Geldard on the other hand was potting well and a fine 51 break in the second frame demonstrated his intent. Cox missed a simple brown off the spot in the third and when Geldard cleared the table with a 22 Cox must have wondered why he made the long trip from Peterborough for this one.

                      Brian Cox and Jordan Geldard

But then things changed. Cox seemed to get a bit of running and he started to cue well. A break of 35 followed by a 22 earned Cox the fourth frame. A terrific 71 break in the fifth illustrated what a fine breakbuilder Cox is. Geldard got a kick when 20 down in the next and the resulting 23 break from Cox meant he was soon level at 3-3. Geldard had a great chance to steal the seventh frame, but when looking odds on for the clearance he fell short on the brown and then proceeded to go in-off as he tried to play the cue ball around the table. In what proved to be the final eighth frame, both players were feeling the pressure. Geldard in particular was suffering when on a break of 19 and a potential clearance he snookered himself on the yellow. This proved to be Geldard's last real chance and Cox finished well to set up a last 16 encounter with fellow coach Barry Stark.
