  • 1973 World Amateur Snooker Championship

I recently purchased some old snooker programmes/ magazines on eBay and amongst them was a quite extensive programme for the 1973 World Amateur Snooker Championship, which was due to be held in Wrexham, Aberdare, and Cardiff. I have not, however, been able to track down results for this Championship amongst my vast library of snooker books, which would suggest that the tournament did not actually take place in spite of a tournament programme being prepared. Can anyone confirm that this was the case and the reasons for it? Am very curious to find out what happened.
    Cheers,
    Gareth.

Unfortunately I don't know the scores but I do believe it took place as I have a multi signed copy of the programme. I will check my programme this evening and see if any of the scores are written in it.

It was held every two years from 1966 to 1984 so there was no tournament in 73 , i think it was held in Cardiff in 72 .

It was held in Scotland in 1970 (Jonathon Barron 11-7 Sid Hood) and then in Cardiff in 1972 when Ray Edmonds beat Mannie Francisco 11-10.

In 1974 it was held in Dublin when Ray Edmonds won it again

Really surprised there were no Canadians there as we had some very good players here at that time, even Thorburn wasn't a pro then I believe.

Janie...as an aside, would Paul consider holding the IBSF Worlds at the SWSA? I know it would be awful short notice and very expensive but I was thinking you already have the Holiday Inn set up nearby, I think enough tables and the match arena with great seating.

If it was held in England I think the IBSF would get a massive turn-out and the SWSA would, I think, get some really good bar and food receipts along with some shop sales. I passed on entering the Masters in Egypt but for sure I would come if it was held in the SWSA (or even somewhere in Europe and if I could get a spot).

Now that would be the best ever IBSF World Championship in history and the answer to many heartbroken players prayers.

Thanks for the responses to this thread. It appears that the World Amateur Championship was actually played during January 1973 (the programme cover has 1973 emblazoned across it) but it has gone down in history as the 1972 Championship, perhaps to make it appear that the tradition of playing it every second year was maintained. A bit strange really given that it hasn't appeared to bother anyone that there were two World Professional Championships in 1970 and none in 1971!
