A WHOPPING £450 is on offer to the winner of a snooker Pro-Am in Woking next month.

The inaugural Surrey Snooker Open Championship is being hosted by Woking Snooker Centre on Sunday, December 16.

You don’t have to live in Surrey to enter. And you don’t have to be a member of the club. You just need a cue. But you must be aged 16 or over on December 15.

This is the venue where the Cuestars Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Tour legs were played on November 11.

Prize money will be scaled down if fewer than 64 entries are received but will rise if that number is exceeded.

    Projected figures are: Winner, £450; runner-up, £150; losing semi-finalists, £30; losing quarter-finalists, £20.

The date does not clash with any Cuestars or EASB events.

Entry fee of £15 must be received by Friday, December 14. Dress code is smart casual. The one-day tournament will use a straight best-of-five frame knockout and a best-of-seven final. The miss rule will be applied. There will be a couple of floating qualified referees. Professionals will give handicap starts to amateurs.

Players must be signed in by 9.30am on the day ready for a 10am start.

Terry Teeman, former press officer for the English Association of Snooker & Billiards, is tournament director. He has a passion for grass-roots snooker and said the club is “already taking a steady stream of entries”.

Payment details can be found at www.snookerz.co.uk.

    Woking Snooker Centre address is:

Good stuff and hope it goes well, great you can enter/pay online these days too.

But, this no trainers and jeans thing, is this usual in snooker clubs these days or just for the comp? And very good luck in policing the no mobile phones near the tables, I agree with that.

I remember travelling to Poole for a pro-am in the days when first place prize money was often over 1k in pro-ams or amateur comps and you could pick up 300+ for a midnight flyer in London - where's it all gone?

Hi Guys & Gals, I am the 'Terry' in question and would like to thank 'Snookerdad' for posting this article. I love grass roots snooker, and Ive been lucky enough over the past few years to be able to see at first hand what great talent there is out there playing in clubs all over the place.

I really just wanted to give anyone who wishes to have a go - the chance to have a go! - I'm hoping that we hit our '64' target and that everyone that comes has a great day out. Thanks in advance to those of you who pass the word on to your friends / family etc and I hope to see as many of you as possible on the 16th.

        All the best

        Terry ( terry@snookerz.co.uk )
