  • County snooker teams will re-energize the game!!!

Hi TSF! I would just like to share my recent experiences with regards to the state of the game in my opinion.
I recently attended a Pro-am Tournament in Derby. Which was coincidentally advertised here on TSF! Cueball club is an ex-Riley's club that has been re-opened and re-furbished to an outstanding degree.
I got talking to the lads in there, and it did'nt take me long to realise the difference in attitudes compared to my area. All the people i spoke to had total respect for one another's ability. On and off the table. I mentioned that the state of the game locally was of concern. To which a guy from Derby (who i now totally respect) suggested to me that i should start up a County Squad! I was apprehensive at first, although he assured me that it would have a positive impact in our area. There passion is un-measureable to be sure, and they have so many plans for Derby's involvement with regards to the sport. That it leaves you in total admiration towards them.
I subsequently accepted their invitation to enter their Singles league that they are running at the moment, which just confirms my excitement!!!
So...We took their advice and have now set up a County Team, to accommodate a friendly against Derby this Monday evening at 7pm. We have 8 confirmed players for the evening, and have setup a facebook page. Interest is picking up and has already surpassed expectations to be honest. We have gained sponsored Polo shirts that will be ready prior to our game. This was all achieved within one month! Within 24hrs of the facebook page being launched, we had new enquiries from Leicestershire. Which we will persue once we have completed our Home leg to Derby.
There has already been talk of us all ressurecting County Inter-league Matches!!! So this is i am sure going to help promote new and old interest, and appears to be the most successful way to achieve this.
Why don't we all Start/Re-start County Teams to help the fast re-growth of this fantastic game we ALL play???
    Cheap and Cheerful! 😄

      See you Monday night.

Really looking forward to the evening. I am sure you will love it.

You are also correct when Jim set up the Derbyshire team to play Nottinghamshire it created a buzz in the area. There are 2 teams now and with you guys getting involved and Leicestershire the interest in snooker appears to be picking up.

Things have certainly come along way since that first match over 2 years ago!

Well done, as Tim said good on you

There should be more people like you in league snooker.

More Counties should get their County sides restarted or set one up.

It's a real shame that, by and large, county snooker died a death. It still thrives in certain areas, but it all hinges upon there being one or two individuals to make it happen.

Grass roots snooker really has been neglected by the governing bodies for far too long. A resurgence of county-based snooker is long overdue, so good luck to you, and let's hope it starts a trend!

We, Derbyshire, have not long played a friendly game against Staffordshire. Staffs have since arranged a game with Leiciestershire and Warwickshire and Derbyshire have a friendly against Leicestershire.

That is Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire now. The ripples are spreading.

Another thing to note is that we aren't putting together teams of great players. They are teams of good players who are reliable and want to play the game with a competitive edge and make new friends. Win or lose a great time is had by all as far as I can see.

Devon used to have a strong team years ago.. I heard that technically, they are still the holders of the 5 man County championships? ( I'm sure someone will correct me on that ).

County snooker teams will re-energize the game!!!

back twenty plus years ago it used to be three man team. Not sure when if it went to 5 man as u alude to. Devon currently just play a 7 man friendly v Cornwall each year that also involves billiards and junior section.
Its not how well you play its how good you look playing that counts!

So far we have played in the Home Internationals at Prestatyn, taken part in a team tournament in Plymouth and we also have an annual challenge match against a select Sheffield team.

We are always on the look out for more stuff to take part in or alternately if a county fancies it they could give Guernsey a bash!
Why don't u take a look at national league website? They host a comp over 23/24tj Nov at swsa. Was a good one last year mate

County snooker sounds a really good idea and im sure if someone setup a competition for all the county teams to play in it would soon take off. Unfortunatly i dont think this would get of its feet nationally just for friendlys.

Think our club at Barratts in Northampton is actually playing a club in Derby at the end of August. Should be good.

I am delighted to announce the ongoing growth of County Snooker! We (Staffordshire) have played two friendy's to date and have another one lined up for this coming Sunday (15th September). Coincidentally, Derby are hosting their next game playing Newcomers, Warwickshire on the same day!
Our aim is to further promote and more importantly, try to tempt back all of the former top quality players!!! This is our main focus as this will require the most work. There are signs of this being possible, but it will take time as we are fully aware. It is an area which has never been addressed in the past. I am positive that this situation is widespread too! We do have to become pro-active in order to reverse the previous trends, and it is to our benefit with a much wider knowledge of conditions and players requirements as we are players too!
Plans are to form an Inter-County league which will be the explosion for people's enthusiasm to get involved!
Our next game is against Leicestershire, and will be held at Plaza Snooker and Pool club, King Street, Fenton, ST4 3NA.
Spectators are more than welcome to come along and see what's going on. Maybe even have a chat about the continuing progress of this. Play starts at 1pm.

                              Happy Days!!!
                              Cheap and Cheerful! 😄
