Terry, a question for that I thought of a few days ago when out playing with mates.
You talk of practising in your snooker basement (luck so and so ) and entering various tournaments but do you not comment that you just pop down the club for a few frames with mates? Is it because there is no local club to you, etc.? Or you have no mates

      DeanH:

The nearest club to me is in Kitchener which is about a 45min drive away but no players go in there during the daytime anyway. The next one is Shooters in east end Toronto which is about 3hrs away with traffic on the 401 and besides their tables have Simonis cloth on them from the Canadians and it was the absolute pitts to play on as they don't clean their tables very often.

The next one, the Annex, is in downtown Toronto so I would not only pay table time but also about 10GBP per day for parking if I could find a spot and that is worse for traffic than Shooters, plus the tables are the pitts too.

So nowhere really to practice during the day and besides I might have coaching booked so getting away is inconvenient although summer has been really slow. In addition I have a life outside of snooker and chores to do, like cutting and strimming my acre of grass or shoveling snow or anything else that needs doing around here on the 'Davidson Estate' in beautiful Alma, Ontario.

In the evenings I prefer to relax at home with my wife (if she happens to be here, which is not all that often). When she isn't here I can't get away anyway as we have 2 dogs and right now I have 4 dogs (have son's dogs as my grandson just had a kidney transplant) here and my wife is in Britain swanning around visiting relatives or attending glass seminars or workshops (she is a well known glass artist).

Plus, all my mates (not a whole bunch of them) live miles away although sometimes they come here for a day's practice, but again not often as it's quite a drive for them too, and they still work.

That's a shame that there is nothing decent closer.
Yep we all need to look after the homestead,
especially when the boss is away

of course I am not jealous of your snooker basement, not one bit

I go up to see Terry at his teaching facility when ever i get a chance, in fact i am heading there this coming Saturday. He is a great guy and yes a walking book of knowledge and loves to share it with us all. Great little story. I am looking forward to Saturday, it is always great to go up and play a few games and get some pointers. I always said if you have the chance to play with better players you cannot help but get better. I wish i had started playing at a younger age like i did with golf. I started playing at age 11 and by the time i was 22 i was playing on the Canadian tour with names like Moe Norman, Dave Barr & Dan Halderson but my real love now is Snooker.

I find it quite strange tbh tel, your the only player iv known in your age group that's still struggling and somewhat baffled with technique. You've made the tons in competition, done the maxi, you've won tournaments, a bit of a rep and even got the T-shirt Yet by some of your posts you still sound like a bit of a beginner.. Know what I mean?!
All my old sparing partners that where 70+ had all there technical configurations down yes, they may not have been able to get down on the shot like they use to and shake a bit yet, their overall technique and cue actions where all there.
                Not yanking, its just curious.

                          ah gotcha,
well I am not like you, yes I am in my 40s (thanks for reminding me ) but definitely I do not feel that I have reach my potential in snooker or anywhere else for that matter (well, after 4 children maybe one aspect I should stop for now ). And I do personally try to learn something new everyday (not just in snooker).

I will be 50 in December and I keep practicing every night. I still feel I can master this game. I keep saying to myself if I can still shoot under par on the golf course then there has to be hope that I can control a little white ball around on a 6x12 piece of slate...LOL

I'm in my late forties and I am a far better player now than I was fourteen months ago , and I am improving a little bit all the time, I can just feel its getting closer. J6 I play the old guys at snooker when the leagues on, and I know what you mean, they may stand up a bit on the shot but they cue beautifully right through the ball and commonly stick in fifties(not all of them mind ) and as for the billiards they walk the league every year, five man team with a total age of around three hundred and fifty lol.
I didn't play the game fourteen months ago
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

                                j6uk (& all):

Don't forget I didn't play at all while in the Navy for 23 years, then started in the late 70's. I also gave the game up for 10 years in 1995 when I came back to Canada and didn't like what I saw around the snooker scene.

So if I subtract the 23yrs navy plus 10yrs lay-off it would make me like a 35yr old and just starting out. (I wish I was 35yrs old again I'll tell you)
