  • Etiquette in local league snooker

Hi, have you came across bad etiquette in your local leagues? I only ask because last night my opponents behviour was an absolute disgrace and he should be banned from ever playing in the league again. He was consantly shouting out while i was on my shots, bashing his cue and the table everytime he missed a pot or played a bad shot, shouting things like "i'm playing like a nob", went to the bar to get a drink mid frame, shouting "come on" when he fluked a snooker.

There was more but you get the idea. His behaviour really put me off my game and i ended up losing the frame.
I think his behaviour was a disgrace and in my eyes it's a form of cheating.
I played him earlier on in the season aswell and it came down to the final black, he left me a tough shot to middle pocket with white on the cushion and he walks away unscrewing his cue and slamming it in his case, i managed to pot the black but really i should of shook his hand and not bothered with the black as he was virtually conceding.

I play ro enjoy the game not have this rubbish happen, it's happening far too often but how do you clamp down on it.

I think you just need to grow some tbh.

If your opponent's behaviour was out of order you should have had a quiet word with him at the time, its quite likely that he didn't know it was affecting you so thought nothing of it.
Again if it was something he was doing deliberately then speak to the ref - or if the ref is your own team's and it might be seen as biased, have a word with his captain? If you already expected a problem having encountered it before, then even more reason to speak about it before the game?

I'm not sure what writing this on here does to help the situation. I'm sure lots of people reading this are like me thinking "you wouldn't have minded at all had you not lost", in which case the problem is yours, not his.

I have seen this a lot in the lower divisions of my local pool league.

I agree with what you're saying however this sort of behaviour is very difficult to clamp down on, the referee should really say something but in my experience they never do.

I also tend to find people like to barrack in the same way.

Dont you have a Referee overseeing your matches ? During our matches we cannot have a referee for every table (Only have one at real big matches) but we always have a responsible person who has a good knowledge of the game sort of patrolling the tables he will oversee any matters regarding rules and etiquette, touch wood we have had very little trouble of this kind, bad behaviour would not be tolerated, dont you have a committee that you could have a word with in private, not wishing to stir things up but they cant be doing their job, I can assure you that people like that will get their just deserts dont let it wind you up,

Can you not read mate? I won the first match against him. He knows it gets to people thats why he does it. The referee was his own teammate so not gonna say anything to him is he. And as for growing some the likelyhood is i will spark him out next time (which i absolutely don't want to happen) i just think behviour like that is a disgrace.

Yes I can read thanks. I know you won the first game, and I do not recall a rant posted on here when you won the game.... my point.

Unless you say something at the time, to the relevant person i.e. him directly, or the ref (you're pre-judging the ref too by "knowing" he wouldn't say anything to his own player) - you can't really complain. Now you've moaned after you've lost, it's obviously going to be seen as sour grapes.

As a captain or a ref I'd be mortified if someone complained about one of my players, and would sort it out there and then.

I did complain to the ref several times who just shook his head and said i can't say anything to him. To be fair to his other teammates they all said his behaviour was a disgrace but only after he left the club. I'm not moaning on here for something to happen about it, it's a forum for snooker related topics and this is snooker related is it not? I would just like to hear other peoples views on it and see if they have ways of dealing with it because why should we just put up with it or behave the same way when it's not in our nature. You have your opinion fair enough but to come on with stupid comments like grow some is just ridiculous tbh.

It put me off my game completely. The guy is a very good player so doesn't need to behave the way he did.

I laugh at players like this because mentally it shows how weak they are that they need to resort to tactics like this to give themselves a chance of victory.

To me you are falling for his tactics rather than just composing yourself and getting on with your own game. So long as he isn't calling out during your shot then I fail to see it as anything other than someone trying to gee themselves up.

I am a bit of table banger when I miss an easy shot or mess up a positonal shot, I can see how some could see it as bad behaviour but its frustration that you sometimes need to let out.
If someone was to moan about that then I'd tell them what to do with themselves. There is nothing in the rules that says you can't show your emotion when playing. So long as people don't do anything when the opponent is at the table that is about all you can expect.

I agree with most of this mate. I held myself together pretty well untill it just got too much then it was just a case of trying to hold my temper because i was close to ripping his head off tbh. I don't mind ppl showing emotion thats absolutely fine even banging the table and slamming their cues i'm fine with that but he was punching the table and tapping his chalk on the table while i was actually cueing up on a shot and also shouting out while i was on shots. I'm new to league snooker so maybe i will deal with it better next time should it happen again but in my opinion ppl should't have to put up with it.

Yes. This was another reason I quit playing in the league. It was just happening way too often aggressive bad behaviour, and I can't be bothered with it.

I just enjoy a game and the social side of meeting the other teams and having a chat after the matches. But this was spoiled way too often by the behaviour you've mentioned.

cueman has got some very good points there but it's very difficult to do depending on how you're feeling on the day ect... if you are confident with the game on the day and feeling mentally strong it works a treat and you can actually get too them for doing rubbish like that!!

I had some similar things happen during my game this week and i managed to win but it affected my game and could of cost me.

I would also say if people are talking out loudly while you're on shots go back to the seat and have a rest then when someone asks you what's up just say i am waiting for them to finish there conversation so i can continue to play my game.

it's not on it's blatant cheating and people do it because it has worked for them in the past and it's the only way they can win if you are not at the table you should be quiet and show the other player respect , you should definitely report it to your committee

players like this should be warned by committee and if they continue to cause problems banned
