A BARNSLEY cueman has won his first event on a national snooker tour for players aged 40 or over.
Mike Henson dropped only one frame in five matches to secure the fifth leg of the English Masters Tour at Chelmsford Snooker Club.
“It was nice to play different players I had not met before (and beat them, presumably),” he said.
After winning both group-stage matches and advancing through two knockout rounds with 3-0 scorelines, Henson lost the first frame in the final to Graham Beardmore.
Despite his Stoke opponent opening the next with a 44 break, Henson took the frame on the black.
A run of 59 gave Henson the lead on the blue and he wrapped up a cat-and- mouse 3-1 victory in the fourth with more ease.
“They were good tables on a whole,” said Henson, who reached the semi-finals of the Masters Championship last season.
“The day was a good solid performance, especially my safety game. I was quite pleased with my all-round performance.”
Elsewhere, Anthony Harris (Sutton Coldfield) pocketed the £20 high-break prize after recording the three best runs of the day: 97 in his first match, 98 in his second and 83 in his quarter-final tie, before being outclassed by Henson in the last-four.
Essex man Sean Ward posted six breaks of more than 40 in nine round-robin frames, added a 57 in a 3-0 last-eight victory over Andrew Esgrove (Croydon) and led Beardmore 2-0 in the semi-finals... But then it all went wrong.
Beardmore wrapped up the match of the day with a 55 clearance.
Runaway rankings leader Wayne Brown (Merseyside), who defeated Henson in the fourth-leg final, withdrew from the tournament the day before.
The sixth leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon, on Sunday, April 6.
