  • Masters’ master

YORKSHIRE snooker ace Mike Henson took time out from celebrating winning the English Masters (40+) Tour to praise his fellow competitors.

A quarter-final appearance in the final leg at Grantham Snooker & Pool Club, Lincs, secured the title.

Henson (Barnsley) had to qualify from the group stages to overtake rankings runner-up Jamie Bodle (Derby) and third-placed Wayne Brown (Merseyside) who were competing in the European Championships in Bulgaria.

After a 3-0 last-eight defeat by Anthony Harris and after officials from the English Association of Snooker & Billiards had done the maths, calculating the best six results from the eight legs, Henson said: “Wow!

“There are some really strong players at the moment playing on the Masters Tour and I hope to try and stay on top next year too.

“It was a difficult tournament in Grantham as I had not played much since (the previous event) and we didn’t get much notice of the rearrangement. There were a couple of surprise results and I think everyone there was on the same sort of level.”

In the six events he attended, Henson won one, was runner-up twice and a losing semi-finalist three times.

Meanwhile, Harris enjoyed the sweet taste of success with his brand new Candy cue.

The 46-year-old from Sutton Coldfield came back from 2-0 down to account for Mike Preston (Brough, Yorks) 3-2 and claim his first tournament win of the season.

He pocketed £80 plus the high-break prize of £20 for an 85 in the group stages after retiring his 32-year-old cue.

“It was my first tournament with the new cue I had had for just over a week,” he explained.

“It was time for a change as I had my old cue since I was 14 and it had got a bit thin at 8.4mm.”

Harris, who finished the season ranked fourth, added: “I scored fairly well the whole day and was pleased to come back from 2-0 down in the final.”
