  • News For All Ontario Snooker Players

Because of our disatisfaction with the official association here in Ontario and our inability to get them to agree to some changes Les Edwards and myself are going to start another snooker circuit in Ontario. It will be called 'ontariosnooker.club' and that will be the actual website (I didn't know you can have 4 letters in the extension, but I guess you can). The website should be active by this coming Friday 16th of January (fingers crossed).

Here is some info which will appear on the home page:

"Les Edwards and Terry Davidson became progressively disenchanted with the way snooker was being organized in Ontario. Mostly they felt the present association wasn't being very supportive in finding a way less skilled players could get some competition with their peers and be able to win some prize money and also the way the entry fees were being distributed back to the players as prize money since over half the funds were being held back and this resulted in limited prize money in the regularly scheduled tournaments.

After a non-productive meeting held in January, 2015 Les and Terry had a meeting with interested players and people with a vested interest in growing snooker in Ontario and came up with an alternative plan for tournaments which would be more inclusive and provide players of any skill level a chance to compete with their peers without having to play a strong player in their first match and end up losing their first match 4-0 and going home.

OntarioSnooker.club intends to start a series of tournaments at first-class clubs which will have 2 separate flights of players, designated 'AA' for those less skilled players and 'A' for the more skilled players. On the first day all the AA players will be placed in a random draw and will play down to 4, and a little later the A players will play their peers and get down to 4. At that point the 2 groups of 4 players will be put into the 1/4-final in a directed but random draw where in the 1/4's each AA player will play an A player.

Entry fees will be 100% distributed as prize money in a 40%-20%-10% and 5% and there will always be 4 AA players in the 1/4-finals where they will each receive at least 5% of the prize pool. We intend to have no membership fees initially and entry fees will be $40 with $30 going to the prize pool, $7 in green fees to the room owners and the remaining $3 will go towards the high break which will be limited to $50. Any money remaining from the $3 will go to website maintenance and anything left over at the end of the year will be plowed back into the prize pool for the next season's first tournament.

We are also hoping juniors (u21) and women players will be interested in being able to play 2 or 3 matches with their peers before they play one of the more skilled players and also we will be offering free group coaching to anyone who wants it from Terry Davidson who is certified as an IBSF Master Coach and WPBSA Level IV Coach."

Please pass this information to any snooker players in Ontario who may be interested. Our first tournament will be at The Corner Bank with 8 Shender tables, Hainsworth Match cloth and new 1G balls. Because we don't have any referees it will be no MISS rule (although players are expected to make an honest effort) and cueball fouls only. Relaxed casual dress (dress shoes, slacks and golf/polo shirt). All matches up to the final will be best-of-5 and the final will be best-of-7.

Great news Terry and Les. It will give hackers like me a chance at not getting an ass-whipping every tourney. Good on you guys. Looking forward to seeing the website.

    Cheers, Wayne G

Our website (ontariosnooker.club) is now up and running with a little info in there. We will be adding more information on our tournaments as Les can find the time since right now he is the webmaster. The posted email for me is not set up as yet but the one for Les is working fine. If you have any questions please PM or email either Les or me (terrydavidson45(at)gmail(dot)com) and we would be glad to answer them

You know Terry, I gotta say this. You are starting to become a bit of an idol of mine. What I mean, here you are at your age ( and I mean no disrespect) and your passion for snooker (and for life) puts me to shame. You fly half around the world for a game and you still show the passion and drive to try and right what you feel is wrong. And than there's me at the tender age of (soon to be) 48 and sometimes feeling sorry for myself and past it, thinking I'm too old for this or that. Your dedication to your passion (and this forum) is something I really admire and I sincerely hope you never grow tired of snooker, so we can enjoy your contributions to the sport we all love so much for many, many years to come.

If you google 'www.ontariosnooker.club' it will come up. We are just in the process of getting all the info up. Our first tournament will likely be at the Corner Bank and we have 2 other snooker clubs we are talking to about holding our tournaments. The really good thing is our 'flight' system guarantees there will be 4 of the 'AA' players (these are 'A' players from the OSA tournaments) in the 1/4-finals who even if they lose to the 'A' player are guaranteed prize money.

Since most of the entry fees come from the 'AA' players we felt it was a lot more fair to have a system where they could earn some prize money and not having the random draw system the OSA uses where typically the weaker player will draw a strong player in the random draw, lose their first match 4-0 or 4-1 and end up going home disgusted. This way they play their peers in the first 2 round, maybe 3 rounds depending on the numbers, before they have to play one of the good players.

In the meantime the 'A' players will have to play at least one match against another good player so they'll have to sharpen their games too.

It should be interesting to see how the players accept this format. I can't claim to have invented it as I adapted it from what they do in golf and also in the PTC tournaments where the amateurs play down on Thursday and Friday and then join the pros in the last 128 round.

Well I finally found a chance to get back on the forum even though it is midnight. Thought I better post something about the website but terry is miles a head of me. Sometimes he is hard to keep up to....LOL I have been busy being a Webmaster but did find time this afternoon to get a few games in with Floyd. The three day layoff did me good as I started to make a few good strokes. Tomorrow first light I am heading up to TD to setup his new email and go over some details and get a few games in. We are now on Facebook just follow the link on our website. Give us a like and a comment and maybe even a friend request.... Bedtime.

The snooker pic banners are really low resolution. Can you get better ones Terry.
