DAD-to be Billy Castle insists the English Amateur Championship “is the one I want”.
The 22-year-old from Reading progressed through to the last-16 south via the South East and London regional qualifier at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon.
“It’s the one I want to win,” he said.
Originally from Marchwood, Castle, whose wife Betsie is expecting a baby boy on May 10, was Southampton’s Town Champion in 2013 and also competes on the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour.
Also through are Ryan Mears (Aldershot), Tokki Yamaguchi (Eastbourne), Alan Harvey (Staines) and former professionals Sean ‘The Storm’ O’Sullivan (London) and Martin O’Donnell (Harrow).
Mears trailed Ashley Beal 3-1 and needed a snooker in the second round before prevailing 4-3.
O’Donnell compiled the day’s highest break of 135 in a 4-0 whitewash of Syed Hassan.
The longest match was a first-round marathon between Sean Vaz and Jon Charlton that lasted three hours and 15 minutes. Charlton won 4-3.
Sean O’Sullivan fired in two centuries, 116 and 117, in three frames to beat Sonnie O’Sullivan (no relation) 4-1 and then fought back from 3-1 down to Simon Dent with runs of 74, 48 and 85 to win 4-3.
The last-16 south will be played at Castle’s new home club, The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury, on the weekend of April 11-12.
