SAQIB Nasir reckons getting fit helped him claim a first tournament win on the English Ranking Series.
The 22-year-old from Birmingham pocketed £400 after beating Michael Wild 5-2 in the final of the fifth leg at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury.
New rankings leader Wild (Oldham) collected £200, plus the high-break prize of £50 for a 109 in that match.
Nasir - who practises on the eight Star tables at the Midlands Snooker Academy, Walsall - hasn’t entered many tournaments over the last year or two because of the costs involved but has played in all five events this season.
He said regular trips to the gym have “made a lot of difference” and added: “I played solid throughout the two days and hope to get on the (professional) tour as soon as possible.”
Earlier, in the last-four, Nasir edged Johnathan Bagley (Leeds) 4-3 from 2-0 down.
Callum Downing’s bid for the highest break of the weekend ended when he missed the brown on 97 in the first frame of his 4-2 semi-final defeat by Wild.
The sixth and final leg is at Cueball Derby on April 25-26.
