  • Miles “overwhelmed” to reach EAC semis

NORWICH-based Grant Miles said he was “overwhelmed” to have reached the southern final of the English Amateur Championship.

In his debut season in the competition, the 23-year-old progressed via a qualifying event at Chelmsford Snooker Club and then the last-16 knockout at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury.

Miles recorded breaks of 81, 65, 62, 54, 52 and 47 in an 8-3 victory over Luke Garland (Dudley) in the southern semi-finals.

But he “thought it was going to be one of those days” when he let slip a 49-point lead in the first frame and suffered a “horrendous kick” to go 3-2 down.

“I just wanted to come out the blocks quick,” he said. “From there, I started to really hammer in some breaks and win every frame with one visit.”

Indeed. Miles won six frames on the bounce.

“It was a very high-quality match,” he added. “Luke made it that way.

“I’ve got nothing to lose as I’m overwhelmed to be in the (southern final) and can’t wait to play and see if I can take it a stage further to become English Amateur Champion.”

He faces Billy Castle, who battered his way through with a trademark break-building blitz.

The 22-year-old Cuestars South of England Championship Tour player recorded nine runs of 50 or more, including a 113, on his home tables at The Crucible.

Southampton’s former Town Champion, now living in Reading, said: “I played really well and I’m very pleased to be in the final. The way I’m playing, I believe I can win it.”

Castle has also received sponsorship for World Snooker’s Q School at the Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton-on-Trent from May 14-25, in which the four semi-finalists from each of the two tournaments receive two-year Main Tour cards.

Matt Emms recorded the weekend’s highest break of 134 in his first match against James Height.

The southern, northern and national finals will be played over the weekend of May 2-3 at the Longton Snooker & Pool Club in Stoke-on-Trent.
