A FORMER snooker professional who picked up his cue for the first time in a decade after attending his dad’s funeral has won the first leg of the EASB Masters Tour Midlands.
Wolverhampton bedroom designer Darryn Walker enjoyed a dream debut on the professional Star tables at the Midlands Snooker Academy, Walsall.
Walker took a 2-0 lead against Gary Miller (Birmingham) in the final with breaks of 45 and 39. And a run of 61 that started with a plant looked to have sealed the match. But Miller pulled that frame back on the black. In amongst the balls again in the fourth, Walker compiled a 65 to win 3-1.
He pocketed £70 prize money plus £20 for the tournament’s highest break of 126 made against Miller in the group stages.
Earlier this year, Walker told the Express & Star he picked up his cue for the first time in ten years after his dad died. He met an old snooker friend at the funeral and decided to give it another go.
Entering the Betway World Seniors Championship, Walker won through four qualifying rounds before losing 2-0 to former world champion Mark Williams, the eventual tournament winner, in the first round in Blackpool.
He then travelled to the South West Snooker Academy in Gloucester and made the snooker world sit up and take notice by losing 4-2 to Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final of the Pink Ribbon Pro-Am.
The second leg of six is at Cueball Derby on Sunday, September 27.
