  • Two wins from three makes Hussain clear favourite

BACK-to-back tournament wins on the EASB Regional Junior Tour Midlands has given Birmingham teenager Hamim Hussain a commanding lead in the rankings.

But the 14-year-old from Small Heath was forced to dig deep to overcome Hereford’s Jed Mann 2-1 in the final of the third leg at the Midlands Snooker Academy, Walsall.

Hussain, who has won the English Under-14 Championship for the past two seasons, said: “I’m really pleased to reach three finals in succession and (record) back-to-back wins.”

He had compiled an 82 break in the group stages and qualified for the knockout in first place despite losing to Ryan Roberts (Northampton).

A 2-0 victory over Oliver Murfin (Derby) and a 2-1 win from 1-0 down against Jenson Kendrick (Stoke) set Hussain up for his third successive final.

Meanwhile, Mann, who chalked up a 100 in his 2-0 quarter-final win over Roberts, also came back from 1-0 down to beat Billy John Harding (Coalville) 2-1.

Hussain took the first frame of the final on the pink but Mann forced a decider with a run of 86. The rankings leader pocketed £80 after winning the third frame.

He leads Joseph Reynolds (Nottingham), who crashed out in the group stages, by 230 points. Mann collected the high-break prize of £20 for his century and climbed to third place, just nine points behind Reynolds.

The fourth leg of six is at The Winchester Snooker Club, Wigston, Leics, on Sunday, April 3, 2016.
