No Wendy but we had girls from India, Poland and Hong Kong.

      Report below:

REANNE Evans has written a new chapter in the annals of women’s snooker by claiming a record fourth straight WLBSA World Championship title.

Shrugging off a bout of flu, the 22-year-old mother-of-one from Dudley beat first time finalist June Banks 5-2 at Cambridge SC (on Wednesday, 7 May).

“In some ways it’s as good as the first,” she said. “I felt no pressure, just play my game and hope for the best. Coming up to this tournament, I hardly picked my cue up because I haven’t been very well.”

Evans, partner of NI professional and world No 16 Mark Allen, eased through to the final winning 23 successive

But former England international Banks ended the run by taking the first frame of the final with a long pink.

Evans responded with a 52 to win the second. Banks fell foul of the miss rule when trailing 2-1 and the 16 penalty points cost her the chance to level. Although the 39-year-old from Orpington did pull a second frame back in the sixth, Evans dominated the next.

The two-time IBSF World Ladies Champion, who defends her European title in Poland next month, has again ruled out joining seven-time champion Allison Fisher and five-time champion Kelly Fisher on the lucrative US pool circuit, for the foreseeable future.

But neither of the two great queens of the green baize lifted the title four years running.

“People might say it’s because Kelly or Allison or whoever are not here, but it’s their choice to go to America,” insisted Evans. “It’s up to them at the end of the day and I’m happy with what I’ve done.”

Maria Catalano’s dream of a first world title ended less than 24 hours after her cousin Ronnie O’Sullivan claimed his third, in a 4-2 semi-final defeat by Banks.

Evans beat Portsmouth’s Emma Bonney 4-0 in the second semi but had to survive a black-ball game in the second frame and a re-spot in the third.

congratulations Reanne and Emma (who won the Billiards title)
Reanne also won the Mixed Pairs title - she played with Neil Robertson.

it was nice too, to see Polish player Malgorzata Sikorska doing so well - she won the Plate and is the seniors runner-up (chris sharpe won the seniors title)

Why is the women's final still so ludicrously short? Couldn't they at least play best of 19? I can't get into a match that short

If I'm not mistaken, Allison Fisher (before she made the trip to the US to become the most dominant women's 9-ball player ever) once attempted the main tour, but didn't go very far.

I don't think there's any inherent physical disadvantage - Fisher was playing mixed doubles with Steve Davis in the early 90s and running off centuries of her own - as much as it might be the same reason that we don't see Americans of any gender attempting the main tour or even the PIOS at all - with no money in the women's game, the incentive to refine form for non-amateur competition does not exist.

I do wonder if any women have attempted the main tour or PIOS since the Duchess of Doom left for the United States.

As for entering the main tour, the pathway - this is my simplified thinking of it, coming from an American not entirely familiar with the system - is this:

amateur titles - some give you a berth into the PIOS
success in the PIOS - getting a berth in the main tour
winning tons of qualifying matches (i.e. Ronnie O'Sullivan's start in the main tour in 1992) to rise up the rankings and become an established pro

Of course, the reward for rising up the rankings as an established pro is pre-entry into the ranking tournaments - and, as Drago and White have demonstrated, the reverse happens when you slide down; you start being forced back into those qualifying matches, adding to the grind of tournament play (and presumably eating away from practice time).
