Neil Robertson was in scintillating form as he raced in to a 7-1 lead over six-time Crucible champion Steve Davis.
Backed by a vociferous crowd, the nugget failed to show the form which saw him beat John Higgins in round two. Whereas, the Australian looked a completely different man to the player who struggled past Martin Gould.
The opening frame was a scrappy affair with both players having the chance to get off to a good start but it was Robertson who prevailed after a tactical exchange.
Davis was well set in the second before missing a simple blue in the middle and that let Robertson in to clear with a brilliant break of 92.
The Australian was looking back to his best in frames three and four by knocking in breaks of 63 and 57 to storm into a 4-0 lead at the interval.
The biggest roar of the session came in the fifth frame, where the Nugget finally registered on the scoreboard, edging a close, tactical battle.
Davis’ legions of fans were to be left disappointed though as that was the only frame he was to win.
He perhaps should have had more frames on the board but the constant missing of easy pots was catching up with him and he was punished at every opportunity by the clinical Robertson.
Robertson only needed one chance in the seventh, knocking in a classy 89 break to lead 6-1.
It was another 50 plus break in the final frame of the session from Robertson which stamped his authority on proceedings. Davis did have an early chance but broke down on 25 after missing another red. That left the Aussie in to make a break of 53, to take the frame.
In the other quarter-final Mark Allen leads Graeme Dott 5-3. The Irishman had stormed into a 4-0 lead before the 2006 Champion fought back.
Play resumes at 7pm tonight.
