  • What if?

The thread on the top 10 had a little digression there when we went on to thinking about a few What ifs? Clearly what ifs never happened, but I thought it may be worth getting peoples opinions and spark a bit of a debate on how snooker's history could have changed on the basis of one shot or a frame or two there or a different decision etc.

    Here's a few for starters.
Jimmy White 59-0 up on Alex Higgins in the 1982 World champs managed to get another couple of pots and wins the frame and match 16-14 to meet Ray Reardon in the final...What if this happened?

    Let's look at three players...
Alex Higgins would only have been a once world champion. Would he have been as highly regarded?
Ray Reardon had already beaten Jimmy White and beat him later that year in another final - Would he have used his experience and tactical game to beat him again and become seven time world champion?
Jimmy White - Could he have gone on and beat Reardon and been the youngest ever world champion - Would this confidence have made him more of a force in the game - perhaps he would have been a 3 or 4 time world champion and regarded in the top 3 of all time?

Stephen Hendry takes his chance against Peter Ebdon in 2002 - Let's look at the two players...
Ebdon would never have been world champion - or conversely would his mental resolve have got tougher to achieve this and would he have beat Dott in 2006?
Hendry would then have been 8 time world champion and I think in 2002 was the last time we saw Hendry at anywhere near his best - Would he have found new found confidence to win other majors in the next couple of years?

And finally - What if the WPBSA had been lenient on the Hurricane in the 1990 disciplinary hearing. (I'm not saying they were unfair) He was banned for a year and docked 25 ranking points, which took him from 14th in the world to 125th. This at a time when the game went open. Clearly he was past his best, but he had just had a very much improved season and got to the British Open final and returned to the top 16 having dropped out the previous year. The previous year he had beat Hendry in the Irish Masters. Would he have had a little bit of renaissance?

There are many more people could suggest and I'd be interested in your thoughts on the above also...:snooker:
