  • should the cue be touching the palm or thenar eminence

    Hi dear everyone

I have been having this grip alignment issue for along time and yet i am confused to make the proper correction.
when i started snooker like 6 years ago my natural grip wrist position was inwards and i tried my best to make it straight, which at the moment it is almost straight but the thumb is not dead straight i guess.
now i was just thinking that i should have not changed the inwards position, but since i have done it long ago i do not want to go back to grip wrist inwards position, but i miss alot, i mean alot.

the other thing i tried was cocking the wrist even out but i dont know if that is the correct changes to apply right now!

when in address position my thumb is straight to floor and at the end of the delivery the cue is touching the entire palm of the hand. but i watched most good players and even pros their grip looks different in address position and also after the delivery. i have attached a picture of jack lisowski as an example, in the end of his delivery , his cue is only thouching the end part of the thumb which is called thenar eminence. and you can see gap between his cue and grip hand ,which means his grip alignment is different ( most century break players look the same)

i am just thinking maybe i am not holding the cue properly, i do no have issue with the grip itself, but the way i hold the cue, like lets say at the end of my delivery, my entire pinky finger is touching the cue but
pros pinky finger position is different at the end of the delivery, i guess just the tip of the pinky finger is touching the cue and there is a big gap between the cue and top part of the pinky finger.

its hard to explain but looking at the picture that i shared here might give you an idea of what i mean

maybe i put the cue either too much in the middle of fingers or finger tips. i just feel that i have a bad grip alignment.
seriously i miss medium to long balls by 10-30 inches. i feel bad very bad

expecting a bit of help from you wonderful people

    thank you heaps

sorry I clicked on the wrong link , its Kyren Wilsons coach Barry Stark I meant to click on . Barry Stark has a good video about this on Youtube . He makes it clear and simple and doesnt overcomplicate things. Sometimes we cannot see the wood for the trees

someone once said, pick up a hammer, see how you do that, do the same with the cue - but don't hit any nails with your cue!

Grip and hand alignment, together with how you use your wrist (or not) is such a minefield !!!!

It is different for all players - I've been through years of messing around trying to get my hand to look like Davis'

What I've come to understand (or rather what I'm currently understanding) - is that wrist and hand position is a symptom (good or bad) of your general setup

The key to alignment is your feet, which help set your upper body with shoulders aligned so you can drop down on line

My friend plays in Devon with Ray Reardon, and if Ray misses, he asks him why and Ray always says he had his feet in wrong position

Of course that is a trite remark, what of course Ray means is that he dropped the cue on the wrong line

Here's something that really helped me:
                        • Setup a lineup
                        • picked 3rd or 4th red down from the blue
                        • white hard against the side cushion in line for a dead straight pot
                        • Now with no tension - stand over the shot (NO walk in)
                        • Get down and see where you miss
                        • Adjust the feet squarer or more boxer style and see what gives you better results
On this shot, you are almost totally relying on your setup to put the cue on line, because you can only see a few inches of the cue in front of you, so it is hard to tell where it is pointing

Once you work out what suits your upper body turn as you get down to the shot, you can use that in normal play

I think as we get older we need a more sideways stance, as our upper body does not have the same flex that we used to have, so we can't reliably twist into the shot as we get down

Remember - eyes looking Object ball to Pocket as you get down, check white center striking - then say to yourself:
"I am ON LINE - just gotta push the cue through smoothly and confidently"

                        ----

So what has all this got to do with the wrist - NOTHING

The wrist will just follow along in a natural way

The key is potting the ball nothing else

I tried that, smashed all the balls with my hammer.

ive looked at your grip and looks fine maybe its to loose, ive recently tighted my thumb and 4finger up, and stopped queezing the thumb and 4finger when striking the cueball, the results have been very good im only just starting 2 get used 2 it, but i will keep doing it untill it becones natural, but everyone is different but try it and see hiw you go

I like the brushing of the cloth, for effect

Seriously though, there is something to be learned from that video. Goes to show what can be achieved by keeping angles simple, and pace of the shot, with no stun or side etc. A lot harder than it looks
