  • Playing with glasses

    Hi,

I am new to the wonderful world of Snooker! Which unfortunately means my game is very very poor. I've not given up hope though and aim to spend as much time on the table practising as possible (Just back now!).

One problem I am having is with sighting. I have read all of the guides online and I believe my left eye is my "master eye" and tried to play with this... Still wasn't really much of an improvement.

I then noticed that I was getting almost "double vision".

I wear glasses for day to day activities. My eyes are generally okay short distances however the length of the snooker table and beyond I can still see but not very focussed (Balls are very fuzzy!). I found when I was going down for a shot I would find myself flicking between looking through the glasses and over the glasses (When moving from cue ball to object ball). In some cases if it was at the position where the frames are I'd literally see double. To resolve this I was having to physically lift my head mid-shot. Surely this is not a good method to apply here?

Due to being new to snooker I've no idea how well I'll take to the game and hence I do not want to spend too much resolving this (After all, I'm sure that 99% of the problem with my game is *me* and not my glasses!)... Therefore some of the recommendations I've found such as a laser eye sugery and contact lenses are not an option.

Is there anything else that I should consider, which others have used with success? Any other tactics to try and avoid this problem? I tried playing without my glasses for a few shots earlier and whilst I felt a little more comfortable at the cue ball, my lack of focus everywhere else made it impossible.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    stick to pool instead

Seriously, snooker is hard enough without having eyesight problems and double vision.

Im having sighting problems myself, due to imbalance of eye strength. At the moment im struggling to get the stance, cue position, and head position right, as im finding i seem to sight better in different positions for different types of shots. Sometimes even when i think ive got the line dead on im not even getting close to the pocket, caused by eye problems.

With the lesser distances im not too affested by these issues.

Wouldnt it be nice to just have the cue under the middle of the chin and be able to see perfectly

i also suffer from this problem, without my glasses i can see about 12 inches in fron of me, then things get really blurred.

so i live my life with glasses 24/7.

ive often left the snooker table with a sore neck, from straining too hard to see up the other end of the table.

unless you have glasses, people dont realise how awkward it is to play with glasses.

sometimes, ive got the rest out, even if i dont need it, because it is less painfull that straining

Thanks for the reply... At least it isn't just me (I wondered if perhaps there was an actual "method" to adopt). I think you have it worse than me (Unfortunately) as I can see the length of the table however with very little focus (The balls are a little bigger and fuzzier - Not what you need!).

I've just ordered a "Spoony" after reading about them on here (See here: http://www.spoonyteam.com/). At £10ish I figured I'd give them a go... It's much less to loose if they are either useless or I don't end up taking well to snooker in the long run.

I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives. Until then, if anybody else has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them.

        Thanks.

... aren't you glad you asked?

Actually LavaChild... this is a nagging issue with me, being now 40 years closer to my 147, having life-long near-sightedness and now short-sightedness too...
I have grown accustomed to Aramith Tournament Felt Balls.

I have tried a friend's Dennis Taylor gOOgles which were awesome... similar prescription progressives so sharp from cue ball on bottom rail to black they stabbed my eyes ... NO THANKS... they would require a very painful extraction from my wallet as well... $750.

I may go for contacts + reading glasses (so I can see the cue tip to chalk) on a lanyard around my neck.

A friend had laser surgery a while back which makes a HUGE difference he says... but that's a $2,500. question.

          Sigh.

Maybe I should just make the most of my God-given talent (?) and let eyes have at it as they are.
Sometimes I wonder if fuzzy eyes = fuzzy thinking?

I wear contacts and swear by them, bit expensive though and take a bit of getting used to

I've been wearing 'Taylors' since I started playing, only recently tried contact lenses and I can say I'd never ever go back to glasses again. Few weeks ago tried to play a frame with glasses just to see the difference - I still can't believe how I managed to pot a ball wearing them all these years....

Thanks for the replies. At the moment I wouldn't want to make a commitment quite like the suggestions above. Whilst I'd hope to be enjoying snooker for some time yet, having only played for a few weeks now I wouldn't want to spend alot of cash/make a lifestyle change only to find I don't keep up with it.

For the moment, I have bought a "Spoony". It arrived yesterday and so I've not had chance to use it yet. It didn't feel very stable on my nose when I tried it on however looking over the glasses, as best as I could try to emulate being down on the table, seemed much better. I'll be sure to report back on this one!

                    Contact lenses

Lavachild, what is the latest with your sighting problems? I've tried contacts and Dennis Taylors. Not decided on next steps. Any thoughts?

Hello,i have same problem. Game between blue and black i can play nicely. But long shots i dont know where i put my cue,i hardly get 2/10 long shots. I can make nice brakebuilding easy 70-130 but cueball must be nicely. Also have problem get right position to stance when i have to hit right side of object ball. I found out i put my cue wrong line, and sometimes i stay too far from cue ball. Now i put my head and cue together, eye making line. Its all about how i go to shot and get stance. I put cue to line and get to stance, helps me and hand goes straight.
