  • Odd cueing flaw, right angle on cue

    Hello
So I am a 30 break player standard and been playing for some time now. I have always wondered about my long game, it's so inconsistent and pretty bad really.

I seem to be putting left hand side on shots, some times right hand side (bear with me)

I set up like this (see picture) with the cue coming at an angle (right hand side) and I counter it with left hand side unintentionally, this has caused me to be able to cue up and down the spots and had a good results, but soon as I introduce power or a slow shot, it varies if I miss to the left or right, due to the inconsistencies in striking.

I would really appreciate some input. Thanks

Sounds like you cue a bit like Judd Trump. You can try cueing along the baulk line, watch your cue coming back and forward keeping the line in the middle of your tip. It may take a fair bit of retraining your muscle memory if you have been doing it for a long time but it will be worth it. Cue doing a full backswing and hand into chest so you feel a finishing point and know where your hand has to be for a straight cue action. Nice and smoothly, at the start, it's not about pace it's just to groove a straight action.
Just out of curiosity, I take it you move on the shot, if you cue across the line do you move a bit to make room.

So your cue is coming out or maybe around your body not getting pulled into it, it's hard to tell really as we can't see you but basics to try would be. Run your cue along your chest, keep your chin on the cue all the way through. Just cue with your forearm, really relaxed grip all the way through. Don't over hit the ball. Concentrate on cueing nice and straight and smooth, it's a stroking game not a hitting game.

classic bringing "cue to body" not "body to cue"
you look online until you come down to the table and then bring the butt to your body
hopefully our resident coaches will point you into the ways of correcting this habit

It's very hard to correct things, well it is and it isn't. That could be corrected by squaring your stance up a bit. That would put your chest to your right a wee bit and not give you that room to pull the cue into you and across the line. I'm the same but left handed. I kind of over rotate a bit in a boxers stance and put left hand side on things, I have to be careful and make sure I play a bit squarer to the shot. I'm not saying that's the cure for you, as I say it's hard to correct others faults but it did work for me
Another thing to try, is do the same thing but put two pieces of chalk on the cushion either side of the baulk line, just wide enough to fit your cue, practice getting up and down, once down lower your cue until its on the cush, if it hits a chalk you have pulled across the line, get back up and try again until you can get down, without touching the chalks.
Can you show a video of you playing through the shot, interested to see if you try to correct this with cueing across to get back on line or if you cue straight but across the line.

                        That’s a great question and important .

Much easier to rectify if your doing the latter ..

Like myself you sight with your left eye but you're standing before getting down in a place where your right eye is on the line and you move your cue under your left eye as you get down which pulls it to the left. You need to stand with your right foot about two inches to the right of the cue ball (width of your foot) and get down on that line keeping your right foot two inches to the right of the cue ball in order to keep your natural left eye sighting on the line as you get down. Do not adjust your feet in any way as you get down, ie: twist or turn one foot or the other as this will also twist and turn your body.
This is the basics of sightrite, you need to stand where your natural sighting sees the line of aim.
It won't be easy to rectify but it's something you must do as you're playing across the line all the time as the butt of your cue is left of the line while the tip is on the line when addressing centre cue ball. Practise adjusting your stance on the baulk line as in your video and check the butt is on the line by placing cue ball on green or yellow spots and lowering the butt onto the side rail to see where it lies.

Thanks for the video, it's a great help to actually see the mistake being made rather than having to argue with someone who's convinced he has different eyes to the rest of us.
It's all about stance and then keeping still on the shot, but if the butt is bang on the line then everything else becomes so much easier.
Speak up, you've got to speak up against the madness, you've got speak your mind if you dare
