  • Cue alignment after walk-in

    Hi guys,

let’s say you set up a straight shot on the blue to the middle pocket. You decide you want to hit the centre of the cue ball, no spin.

So you do your pre-shot routine, walk in and get down on the shot.

My question is - how many times out of 10 do you find you place your cue exactly the right position, without any need for micro adjustments?

I hadn’t thought about this until v recently, but essentially I feel like more often than I should, I find that I might get down and notice I’m aiming slightly to the left (or right) of centre, and so adjust slightly while down.

Im thinking this shouldn’t be the case - 9 times or even 10 times out of 10 on a simple shot like this, shouldn’t I be able to place the cue exactly where I wanted just by walking in in the right way?

im wondering if this is why I can often miss simple blacks off the spot etc - by adjusting while down rather than automatically landing exactly on the line I picked when standing.

I know that generally adjusting while down is ok in tiny amounts but best to stand up and start again - I just don’t think I’ve seen discussions around how accurately you should expect to place the cue/tip in exactly the right spot from the walk in.

(also interested in whether adjusting during the part where you slide your bridge hand into place counts here!)

    tha k you!

I play the shot where I immediately aim maybe 85% of the time, maybe more. I haven't thought about it that much but I don't like adjusting aim and would rather put more spin on the ball to create the angle if I feel I'm slightly off (I have in my mind often Ronnie saying he puts spin on every shot and feel this makes it ok ). If I'm definitely off, or the extra spin will make the shot too difficult, I'll re-adjust, but I find I miss more when I re-adjust compared to when I don't even considering the extra spin imparted. Ideally I want to put as little spin on the ball as possible each shot, but I'm superstituous about adjusting aim because I seem to miss more when I do it. I'm sure everyone is different and I know what I'm saying doesn't follow logic as such, doesn't help my eye sight isn't that great so I probably play with more feel than some other players. Hope this helps and doesn't hinder

      Thanks!

I was having a practice last night, and I think what I’m essentially doing is picking the line of the shot based on where the cue ball needs to hit the object ball, concentrating on that, and then when walking in, my concentration has remained on lining up the white with the OB and the cue position is a bit of an afterthought.

i started instead switching my attention to the cue in the walk in - lining up the cue with the point on the OB and I feel like it lines me up properly more often this way.

essentially no major change but just focussing on the line of the cue to the OB more consciously than before, but obvs also making sure the cue ball is in the right place in relation to both.

I don’t want to over think anything or spend time on things which don’t matter, thanks for your input!!
