  • first finger on grip

I have been watching some videos of ronnie o sullivan and stephen lee in particular and it seems that their first finger grips the cue slightly differently to the others.

I am a coach myself and i know that the grip is all about the first finger and thumb and using this 'ring' to pull the cue back. However, from the videos I have seen it looks like some players grip the cue in the 'v' of the 1st finger and thumb but then have the tips of the thumb and 1st finger touching or similar.

I know this is quite a technical question but i wondered if anyone practises in the same club or plays with any of the pros who do this or am i going mad! I am just interested in exactly where this first finger goes? Am i right in that they are gripping the cue at the top of the 'v' between the thumb and 1st finger and then leaving a gap under the cue to keep the grip light?

    thanks

I know what you mean because I use the same grip technique, I've been told it's unorthodox but it really helps me accelerate through the cueball and provides an inch or so more follow through. The main pressure is applied through the middle finger rather than the index finger.

    Hope this helps your analysis

isn't it all to do with the length of your fingers and the diameter of your butt (no jokes please) ...

the golden advice is to grip the cue with your first finger and thumb but the rest is secondary ... for instance, I have long fingers and an average sized butt so the cue gets nowhere near the "v" ... but a player with shorter fingers and the same sized butt may well have the cue tight against their "v" ...
